TTS attracting best minds in educational institutions
LAHORE, Dec 05, 2007: The Tenure Track System, introduced by the Higher Education
Commission (HEC), is bringing a revolution in the higher education sector, as it
is reversing the brain-drain and attracting our best minds into sciences in
public sector universities.
This was stated by Vice Chancellor
University of Health Sciences (UHS) Prof Malik Hussain Mubbashar after a lecture
on "Tenure Track System and its Implications" on Tuesday. The lecture was
delivered by UHS head of biochemistry department Prof Ghulam Ali Qureshi.
Prof Mubbashar said UHS will make all new appointments at the assistant
professors' level on the tenure track basis. He also informed that UHS will send
19 students abroad for higher education in reputed international universities
for which HEC will provide Rs.93 million to the university.
Earlier,
Prof Qureshi highlighted various aspects of the tenure track system. He informed
that, according to the proposed system which is in place in the US and Western
Europe, an academic does not enjoy a permanent position on the faculty right
from the start but earns it on the basis of many years of solid research and
teaching. This, he explained, is in sharp contrast to the situation in Pakistani
universities where an academic enjoys a permanent position on the faculty almost
from the start.
Dr Qureshi said an academic will be initially appointed
for a 3-year period followed by a 'review' which if successful will
automatically lead to a renewal of the contract for another 3-year period. At
the end of the 6-year probationary period, a committee of experts will consider
the faculty member for tenure appointment on the basis of publications, teaching
and service. He was of the view that the system can be very useful for the
universities, as it will introduce research culture and revision of outdated
courses. A large number of students and faculty members attended the
lecture. The News
