Pattern of class IX and XI question papers
Lahore, Dec 11: The Punjab Boards Committee of Chairmen (PBCC) has deferred its decision to change the pattern of class IX and XI question papers.

According to a press statement issued by the Board of Intermediate & Secondary Education (BISE) Lahore on Thursday, the PBCC has deferred the decision regarding the change in pattern of question No 2 of class IX and XI question papers till academic session 2010-2012.

Therefore, question papers for 2010 annual examinations would be prepared on the previous pattern, the statement concluded.

PPSC written test
Lahore: The Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) has announced that the written test for the posts of Assistant Director Research/ Research Officer (BS-17) in the Punjab Environment Protection Department will be held on December 15, 2009. The test will be held at Board of Intermediate & Secondary Education (BISE) Lahore's Examination Complex situated at 49-A, Lawrence Road.

Speech contests compulsory
Lahore: Schools Secretary Mohammad Aslam Kamboh has said that it will be compulsory for teachers to arrange speech and essay writing competitions in their educational institutions on regular basis.

Speaking at a meeting held at the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE) Lahore on Thursday. Secretary Higher Education Ahad Khan Cheema, DPI Secondary Education Mian Abdul Haq, Additional Secretary Higher Education Ch Akram and DPI (Colleges) Dr Abdul Razzaq Cheema also spoke on the occasion.

Talking about the ongoing Chief Minister's Essay and Speech Competition Aslam Kamboh said the purpose of holding speech and sports competitions in educational institutions was to develop future leaders and enable students to play an active role in national development.

He said co-curricular activities were an important feature of education system adding grading of all schools of the province would be undertaken on the basis of performance and participation of students and teachers.

Ahad Khan Cheema said the purpose of holding speech contests was to develop confidence in students to express themselves and extensive participation of boy and girl students should be ensured in these competitions so as to motivate them to participate in co-curricular activities.

He directed officers of the department that in the next phase these competitions will be held at divisional level and would carry a bigger cash prize therefore, they should ensure holding of these competitions in a transparent manner. The news

PU extended MA MSc Supple admission forms date
Lahore: Punjab University is conducting MA/MSc supplementary examination for the first time. The MA/MSc, Part-I, Supplementary Examination 2009 will commence from January 5, 2010.

The last date for submission of forms with single fees has been extended to December 15 to facilitate maximum candidates in order to save their academic years.

The Examination Department has warned the candidates that those who would not appear in this exam, their one complete chance will be wasted and varsity will not be responsible in this regard. F.P Report

Islami Jamiat Talaba protest
Lahore: The Punjab University (PU) chapter of the Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) held a rally on the varsity campus on Thursday to protest the Nobel Peace Prize to US President Barack Obama and the 'growing American interference' in Pakistan.

Besides the IJT activists, dozens of other PU students also took part in the rally against America, alleging the country was involved in recent incidents of terrorism in Pakistan.

It is pertinent to mention that US President Barack Obama received the Nobel Peace Prize in Norway's capital Oslo on Thursday for his 'extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples'. The rally started from PU Islamic Centre at New Campus and culminated near the varsity's Faisal Auditorium.

Afghan journalists visited PU
Lahore: A delegation, comprising journalists from Afghanistan, visited the Punjab University's Institute of Communication Studies (PUICS) on Thursday.

The delegation said owing to war on terror both Pakistani and Afghani journalists were in the line of fire. About freedom of media in Afghanistan, they said media was still young there and had to face a lot of problems regarding freedom of press.

Health Dept recruits 2,456 quacks at BHUs
Lahore: Punjab Health Department recruited 2,456 'quacks' in grade 17th for providing healthcare facilities to innocent school children at Basic Health Units (BHUs) level and new posts of School Health & Nutrition Supervisors were created for this purpose on the orders of Governor Punjab.

In year 2008, 2nd division MA economics, MA Urdu, MA Punjabi degree holders who had no knowledge of health sciences were made 'doctors' by appointing them as School Health & Nutrition Supervisors at Basic Health Units (BHUs), it has been learnt.

Insiders said the appointments of School Health and Nutrition Supervisors were made mostly on political basis ignoring the fact that MA degree holder candidates do not have the capacity to guide or judge anything about nutrition status of children at the rural schools.

Sources in the Punjab health department informed that the Secretary Health Punjab appointed "educated quacks" for providing health education and healthcare facilities to school children despite the fact that hundreds of young doctors are running from pillar to post for regular jobs in the health department.

The Health Department in its record showed that those recruited had relevant master's degree in nutrition, sociology, social works, psychology, anthropology, botany, chemistry and microbiology in a bid to fill the gap existing in healthcare on account of shortage of doctors willing to serve in rural areas.

The health department after a training of three months on the pattern of Lady Health Workers (LHVs) appointed the 2,456 candidates in grade 17th like 'doctors' with heavy responsibility of health of school children in rural areas.

As per the specifications, including qualification requirement laid down by the Health Department for the posts read as under: "The qualification for the recruitment on posts of School Health and Nutrition Supervisors will be Masters Degree in any subject at least 2nd division from a recognised university, preference will be given to master's degree in Nutrition, Sociology, Social Works, Psychology, Anthropology, Botany, Chemistry, Microbiology, MPA and MBA."

Protest over UHS affiliation
Lahore: Members of Fatima Jinnah Medical College (FJMC) alumni, on Thursday joined college students in protesting against the affiliation of their institution with the University of Health Sciences (UHS).

The old students shouted slogans against the decision and extended their support to their juniors. They demanded that the affiliation be revoked and the college be upgraded to a university.

The students said that they would stage a sit-in outside the Punjab Assembly next week. Several students on Thursday continued their boycott of classes and organised a protest inside the college campus. The students are of the view that they have followed the Punjab University curriculum in their first three years of study and it would be difficult for them to follow UHS curriculum for the remaining two years of their course.
