ICU teachers started boycott of classes
Peshawar: The teachers of Islamia College University (ICU) started boycott of classes Tuesday to press the university administration for acceptance of their demands.

There were no classes in the university from 10am to 12 noon. The teachers resorted to protest on the call of the Islamia College University Teachers' Association and pledged to continue their strike till fulfillment of their demands.

The teachers expressed serious concern over what they called the apathy of the university administration. They said the vice-chancellor had earlier made a commitment with them to come to their meeting and try to convince them on winding up of their strike. However, neither the vice-chancellor nor the registrar bothered to attend the meeting.

The protesting teachers were of the opinion that despite lapse of more than one year of the establishment of the university, no single meeting of the varsity senate could be held due to which their promotion cases could not be resolved.

They said that 70 percent of their promotion cases were pending and the university administration was least interested in resolving them. They said that the university should immediately call the senate meeting so that their problems could be resolved.

Students solidarity with police
Peshawar: The students of the University of Peshawar and Islamia College University Tuesday staged a peace rally to show solidarity with police for rendering great sacrifices in the fight against terror.

The students brought out a car rally from the university, which culminated at the Hayat Chowk near Gora Qabristan.

The students were holding placards and banners inscribed with peace slogans. At Hayat Chowk, the students set free some pigeons as symbol of peace. They also put flowers on the Yadgar-e-Shuhada there.

Earlier, the students visited Campus Police Lines and present garlands to the policemen on duty as a token of love, respect and solidarity with them. The students lauded the services of police and other security forces. They said that the forces were rendering great sacrifices for the protection of the country and the nation.

Establisment of peace
Peshawar: Speakers at a seminar Tuesday underlined the need for motivating and mobilising the youth and students for ensuring peace in the society, particularly in the conflict-ridden areas of NWFP.

Paiman, a civil society organisation, organised the seminar addressed by its Executive Director Mussarat Qadeem, Peshawar Press Club President Shamim Shahid and volunteers and students from the University of Peshawar and other educational institutions.

They said taking an indigenous approach through the youth was indispensable for successful peace building in the conflict-hit areas of the Frontier including the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata).

The speakers praised Paiman for taking the initiative and asked the political and religious parties, civil society organisations, journalists and student community to play their role in mobilising youth for restoration of peace.

Mussarat Qadeem said Paiman had initiated conflict transformation and peace-building trainings with students from various universities of Peshawar and civil society organisations. "We have trained 103 peace practitioners who are conducting orientation sessions with their fellow students and their respective communities in different parts of the province," she added.

She said peace practitioners had made achievements in three tribal agencies and two semi-tribal agencies besides the conflict-hit localities in Swat. Shamim Shahid alleged that the imperialist forces including al-Qaeda had turned the Pakhtun soil into an international war theatre. He said thousands of innocent Pakhtuns were killed, displaced and humiliated in the alien war. He said the opinion-makers, particularly the clerics and religious scholars, should issue bold and realistic statements against the terrorists and warmongers.

Adnan Shinwari, coordinator of Paiman, said that they received positive and warm responses from the tribal elders and chieftains whenever the peace practitioners had visited the tribal areas. "They organise big gatherings and meetings at Hujra where the university students and local volunteers of Paiman deliver their message to the people," he added.

A female peace practitioner, Rahat Iqbal said female students of the University of Peshawar left an image-boosting impact on the local traders and residents of Peshawar when they brought out a peace rally and pasted 'peace posters and banners' on city walls. "The female activists of peace initiatives can play a vital role in influencing minds and hearts for a developed and peaceful society," she stressed. The news
