HEC Pakistani universities PhD Directory

HEC compiles PhD Country Directory
Islamabad, Dec 22: The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has compiled information about PhD degrees awarded by Pakistani universities since 1947.

The PhD Country Directory (PCD), which is accessible through the HEC website, provides information on scholar's name, subject/discipline, title, year of degree awarding, supervisor's name and institution.

This compilation of information about research work by PhD scholars at Pakistani varsities has become possible due to the cooperation of all public and private sector higher education institutions.

The PhD records since 1930 (25 PhD records produced before 1947 by the Punjab University) have also been enlisted in the PCD. In October, the total number of PhD degrees recorded in the PCD was 6,560.

Moreover, the Pakistan Research Repository (PRR), an online repository website, is maintaining a digital archive of all the PhD theses produced indigenously to promote intellectual output of Pakistani institutions at the international level. The repository is currently holding more than 2,800 full-text theses, whereas, more than 800 theses are in the process of digitisation, while 200 are being uploaded. Full text theses may be viewed at

The ultimate objective of this effort is to compile collective research output of all the PhD scholars of the country and to facilitate researchers and other stakeholders.

The contents of the PRR have already been indexed by leading online search tools, including Google and Google Scholar. Daily times

'Black Day' observed against Model University Act
Islamabad: The Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Associations (FAPUASA) observed 'Black Day' on Tuesday in public sector universities to agitate against the implementation of Model University Ordinance in all government-funded universities in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa by the KPK Assembly.

Under the new law, the six seats held by elected representatives of the faculty in the syndicate of a university were done away with and most of the powers earlier held by the syndicate were transferred to a new 21-member senate, which will have only two professors who will not be elected. Rather a vice-chancellor has been empowered to nominate two professors for the senate. The law is operative for all universities in KPK.

Talking to this scribe from Quetta, Professor Kaleemullah Breach, secretary of the FAPUASA, welcomed the constitution of a committee consisting of provincial parliamentarians for reinstating the 1974 University Act in its original form. He said that teachers in all universities wore black armbands, hoisted black flags and took out processions with black banners and posters against the MUA.

Meanwhile, the Academic Staff Association of the Allama Iqbal Open University held a special meeting to protest and condemn the Model University Act. In a statement, Professor Iqbal Shah, president of the AIOU ASA and vice president of the FAPUASA, said all universities are united against the amendments made in the 1974 University Act. He said that FAPUASA would not accept any change regarding the representation of academicians in the senates and syndicates. Professor Zahid Majeed, secretary of the AIOU ASA, said that they stand with KPK universities against the Pakhtunkhwa government's action. He further said that if the government of KPK did not rescind the amendments, universities would strictly react. Members of the AIOU ASA also passed a resolution against the amendments made in the 1974 Universities Act.

Black banners were displayed at the AIOU against the amendments. One banner read: "Democratic dictatorship will not be accepted in universities."

IMCG has new student council
Islamabad: "We are blessed to be one of the best among Muslim Ummah. The Holy Qur'aan has clearly guided us towards two things and those are acquisition of knowledge and the other is adornment of good virtues if we want to become a successful Ummah."

Professor Dr. Zia-ul-Haq, chairman of the Islamic Studies, Pakistan Studies and History Department of the National University of Modern Languages (NUML), expressed these views while speaking at the investiture ceremony held at the Islamabad Model College for Girls, F-7/4, on Tuesday.

He said: "In Islam, more stress is given on 'ilm' and 'akhlaq' and we can preach Islam through these two things. If we have command over these two things then we would become models for everybody." He said: "Islam stresses that education is gender free. Anyone, male or female, should acquire it. There should be no age limit for it. It is imperative that females of our country should get education so that our nation could progress."

The ceremony started with the recitation of the verses from Holy Qur'aan by Mahrukh Umar, while 'Naat' was presented by Hira Abro.

Earlier, Principal Shamim Mumtaz highlighted the achievements of students who participated in various activities of the college. The chief guest took oath from the newly-elected student council.

After that students from various houses took oath from the chief guest. Academic awards were given to Dania Zeb for securing second position in HSSC-I in all model colleges, Sidra Saleem Rao for securing first position in HSSC-II in all model colleges and Benish Hasan for securing first position in the college in BSc-II Punjab University Examinations. Later, Principal Professor Shamim Mumtaz presented college insignia to the chief guest.
