Report sought from HEC
Lahore, Dec 03: Justice Ijaz Ahmed Chaudhry of the Lahore High Court Thursday called for a detailed report till December 22 from the Higher Education Commission (HEC) on registered universities in the country as well as criteria of granting the university status to any institution.

The court passed the said direction on a petition filed through Barrister Javed Iqbal Jafrey contending about 50 institutions given the status of colleges and universities in the country are fake and do not meet the specified criteria.

The petitioner sought direction to the government for closing down all the fake and unrecognised colleges and universities. The petitioner challenged the mushroom growth of fake educational institutions in the country. The court ordered both the secretaries to collect data about the registration of over 50 colleges and universities, pointed out by the petitioner as bogus and unregistered.

The judge also ordered for publishing an advertisement in the press to inform heads/owners of such educational institutions so that they may also appear in the court to defend the legality of their institutions.

Jafrey told the court that he was ready to publish an advertisement in the newspapers from his own pocket so that the owners of such institutions may be informed about the case pending in the court and they may come to defend it.

Petitioner submitted that scores of bogus and ghost institutions were functioning in Pakistan. He said these educational institutions in fact were playing havoc with the careers of youth.

He pointed out that the government had no mechanism to check the private colleges and universities as they were minting money from the students by charging hefty dues.
