VC vows to depoliticise Punjab University
Lahore: Punjab University vice-Chancellor Mujahid Kamran expressed his resolve to improve the varsity's
ranking by depoliticizing its campuses and promoting research culture.
In an interview here at PU New Campus on Sunday, the VC highlighted
efforts to ensure an ideal apolitical environment for students. He asserted that
any pressure group or student organization even from teachers and employees
would not be allowed to violate discipline of the institution as well as the
future of more than 30,000 students. He said that no organization had legal
status to organize its activities or interfere into matters related to the
administration, adding the varsity would not be influenced by pressure tactics
of any political group or illegal organization. Dr Mujahid Kamran said
that some external political elements were backing some senior teachers of the
university and a student organization for their vested interests. He said that
during his tenure as VC, he managed to control most of activities of Islami
Jamiat Talaba (IJT) and they could not organize their functions on the campus
freely as they used to do in past. He said that genuine students could express
their potential through co-curricular activities and their protection would be
ensured at every cost. Dr Mujahid Kamran said the Higher Education
Commission had improved the ranking of Punjab University to 4th position among
universities of the country as its research publications had increased from 269
to 750 till Nov 2011 and the total number of research publications during his
term from 2008 to 2010 was 1,384 which was a positive sign. The VC said
that he took steps for faculty development and improved the efficiency of
teachers through their capacity building and research. He said the university
produced more than 100 PhDs every year during his three-year term and 425 PhDs
had been produced since Nov last. He criticised the role of some senior teachers
for backing a student organisation to pressurise the administration for their
vested interests and to prove their loyalty to a religio-political party, which
had inducted them in the 70s in violation of merit. "We have the
potential to produce more PhDs and the target will be achieved through hard
work, dedication, depoliticization and continuation of policies," he said.
Referring to communication with more than 30,000 university students, he
said that an email system had been designed by which the students send their
mail and necessary action was being taken on their applications. He said
the university also improved linkages with foreign universities and various
agreements had been signed for students exchange, foreign language courses and
visits to benefit from the experience of each other. The VC said that he
had not only reorganized the human resources department at the university but
also regularized more than 3,000 people and also promoted almost 100 per cent
employees. He said with the support of the government and teachers and students,
the university could be included among top 200 universities of the world. The news

Lahore Board to conduct 2012 examinations manually
Lahore: The Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE) ordered the preparation of 2.5
million answer sheets for the 2012 exams, which will be conducted manually, for
more than 0.4 million candidates, following the failure of its online system.
BISE has also decided to send roll number slips to candidates through postal
services under the previous practice. Last year, due to massive errors in
exam results and a delay in issuance of roll number slips due to problems in the
online system, candidates and their parents held widespread protests. On the
request of the Punjab government, a judicial commission submitted an inquiry
report, fixing the responsibility on 27 officers, including heads of all
education boards. In order to avoid past mistakes, BISE has ordered the
preparation of 2.5 million answer sheets and the issuance of manual roll number
slips. Candidates are being directed to obtain forms from the website and send
them to the Board Secretariat by post after filling them. The last date for the
registration of private candidates is December 28 and for regular students is
January 3. In the month of October, there were again reports that the online
registration system of BISE had failed yet again, causing problems for private
colleges registering intermediate Part I students for the 2012 annual
examination through the Lahore Board website. The last date for online
registration was extended till September 26, but the website link for
registration did not work in the last few days. This failure left many regular
students of private colleges unregistered. A number of faults have already been
exposed in the online system of the Lahore Board since its inception in 2010.
The system caused problems for students and the college administration every
time registration began, roll number slips were issued and results announced.
Recently, further problems were exposed when the matriculation result was
announced and more than 10,000 students were placed in the Result Late (RL)
category. Besides the RL case, a number of students also received result cards
full of errors. Daily times
