Changes in equivalence formula for O & A levels

ISLAMABAD, Dec 7: The government has introduced considerable changes in the formulas governing equivalence of British degrees of 'O' and 'A' Levels of Pakistani students to Secondary School Certificate (SSC) or matriculation, and Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC) or intermediate, respectively.

Since long, it was mandatory for O Level students to pass a minimum of seven subjects. The Inter Board Committee of Chairmen (IBCC), which does equivalence, used to count the marks or grades of just five subjects of them for equivalence purpose, IBCC Secretary Ramzan Achakzai told this correspondent.

Now, the O Level students must pass eight subjects and marks of all of them would be computed in their equivalence certificates. It has been made compulsory to clear the subjects of English, Urdu, Islamiat, Pakistan Studies and Mathematics along with three elective subjects. The science students can now have Computer Sciences in place of Biology along with physics and chemistry. But from next year, the subject of computer sciences would not be allowed as replacement for Biology, and such students would have to pass biology.

However, those doing O and A Levels from abroad are not required to have the compulsory subjects of Urdu, Islamiat and Pakistan Studies. But they would have to study English and Mathematics as compulsory subjects. For the purpose of equivalence of their degrees, grades they had achieved in five subjects would be taken into consideration.

Till next year, the O Level students, who had cleared compulsory subjects along with Physics, Chemistry and add Maths will have the facility of having add maths as replacement of Biology or computer sciences. Similarly, for the purpose of equivalence, the O Level students who had opted for Human and Social Biology prior to June 2006 in place of Biology would be permitted to have it.

The official said that the students of O and A Levels, SSC and HSSC have been allowed to improve the grades of any individual subject within one year of the examination held for the same.

He said the IBCC would be bound to revise the equivalence certificates in the light of the improved grade. And so would do all examination boards in the case of detailed marks sheets. According to another important decision, A Level students of humanities group would have to pass a minimum of three subjects to get equivalence to HSSC. Currently, just two subjects are required. In the case of science students, three subjects are already needed for equivalence to the FSc. The News
