APMSO & IJT clash with sticks & guns
Karachi, Feb 11, 2008: Six students were reportedly
injured Saturday during a clash between two student organizations, within the
jurisdiction of Haideri police station.
The fight started at around
11:15 a.m. between students from the All Pakistan Muttahida Student Organization
(APMSO) and Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba (IJT), while routine classes were going on.
Guns, batons and stones were allegedly used by both sides during the
clash and at least six students were injured. Later, the management closed the
college down for the day.
Police registered FIR No. 75/08 over the riots
(under sections 147, 148, 149) on behalf of APMSO activist Danish against the
IJT students, and deployed two mobile units to the location.
Both
organizations claimed the other started the fight. Abid Chandio, IJT's zonal
nazim, denied what the police and the APMSO said that this
problem has been around for a long time. "APMSO activists also attacked us when
we held a welcome party in honour of the new students around
one-and-a-half-years ago. Our activists were injured and kidnapped in this
attack," he maintained. "Around three days ago, when one of our activists,
Mubasshir, went to the college to submit his graduation admission form, they
beat him up. We went there with Mubasshir on Saturday and APMSO activists
started checking our college cards."
"APSMO activists, who claim to be
students of the college, are failures and have not passed their examinations for
the past five years. You can imagine how we felt with them trying to check us.
Harsh dialogue followed and then that resulted in a clash," he
claimed.
To a question, he said, "If we could fire in that area then
wouldn't we have complete control? And, why would the APSMO still be
there?"
IJT activists Faraz, Ayaz and Zahid were injured with batons and
stones during the clash, Chandio added.
On the other hand, the APMSO
denied these remarks and said that the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) was not
participating in the upcoming elections and was trying to postpone them by
instigating violence. "The JI is trying to make the APMSO riot so they were
provoking us," claimed Syed Abdul Raheem, the APMSO spokesman. "But, we will not
become a victim of their conspiracies, and we've instructed our activists to do
the same."
The APSMO's version is as follows: IJT activists came to the
college in cars. They started aerial firing and a stray bullet hit one of their
activists, Sajjad, who was rushed to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. Another
activist named Hammad and one uninvolved student named Sohail were also injured
by batons and stones, Raheem claimed.
Manzar Imam, the in-charge of the
Haideri police post, gave the same statements that the APMSO gave.
North
Nazimabad SHO Salman Waheed said that the reason behind this clash had not been
ascertained at the time this report was filed. Daily Times
