Jobs of 860 ad hoc lecturers uncertain
Karachi, Feb 04, 2008: The future of 860 adhoc lecturers hangs in the balance as their
tenure expired on January 31, 2008 while the summary for job extension was put
forward by the caretaker education minister, Shujaat Beg, to the chief minister
Sindh.
Despite the fact that the summary for the regularisation of adhoc
lecturers was signed by the provincial law and finance department, the future of
860 adhoc lecturers all over Sindh is in doldrums as the chief minister Sindh
must sign it first, sources in the education department said.
Interestingly enough, these adhoc teachers have been assigned duty on Election
Day.
Meanwhile, the other three provinces' chief ministers — using their
discretionary powers — issued notification regarding the regularisation of adhoc
lectures.
However, a delegation of the Sindh Professors Lecturers
Association (SPLA) met Beg on January 28 who assured the action committee
members that two summaries have been forwarded to the Sindh chief minister
pertaining to regularisation of adhoc teachers and extension in their terms. The
delegation led by Professor Manzoor Kalhoro, flanked by Mohammed Chuttal Bozdar
and other lecturers, met the caretaker education minister in his office, who
complained about the prevailing situation. They said that about 2,000 posts of
lecturers are lying vacant that can be filled by issuing appointment letters to
adhoc lecturers.
About 860 lecturers were appointed in the 2005-2006 on
an adhoc basis at grade 17 initially for six months. The period was later
extended. During the extension and reappointment period, Bozdar said that the
issue of salaries was hard hit due to a delay in signing of cheques from the
concerned department. The minister was further informed of this critical
situation, who then assured to remove discrepancies and said that justice will
be provided to the lecturers appointed on adhoc basis.
Moreover, the
delegation asked the caretaker minister that like other three provinces, which
issued permanent appointment letters to their lecturers, Sindh lecturers should
also be obliged with the same policy. The News
