Commonwealth scholarships
London, Feb 25, 2008: A scholarship scheme for students from developing countries has been launched
by the University of Glasgow to mark the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
The Commonwealth Scholarship Scheme will give 53 students the opportunity to
study for a one-year masters course at the university.
Principal Sir Muir Russell said: "Our aim is to offer real and new
opportunities to bright students."
The first students are expected to arrive in 2010.
The scholarships will run beyond the Glasgow Games in 2014.
Full support - fees, maintenance and travel costs - will be offered to those
students from the 14 least developed countries of the Commonwealth.
These are Bangladesh, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria,
Pakistan, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
For the remaining 39 scholars, full fees will be provided. BBC News
Scholarships for Punjab students
Lahore, Feb 25, 2008: Governor Lt General (r) Khalid Maqbool on Saturday distributed
scholarships among 1,700 students of various universities on the Punjab
University's (PU) New Campus.
He said the government would meet
students' scholarship demands if they proved their abilities. The
scholarship-distribution ceremony was jointly organised by the PU and Baitul
Maal.
He said universities should create active links with the industry.
He said the government had granted Rs 7 billion to the PU, Rs 6 billion to the
University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Rs 3 billion to the University
of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS), and Rs 2 billion to the Government
College University (GCU).
PU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran
said, "The purpose of education in our country must be to produce young
Pakistanis with strong moral fibre. It is important to inculcate in our students
a sense of history and a sense of belonging to the Islamic
civilisation."
Baitul Maal Director General Col (r) Ahmad Nadeem Qadri
said the scholarships were not being distributed from a zakat fund, but from the
nation's wealth."
Scholarships amounting to Rs 29,739,441 were
distributed among 1,700 students. Out of these students, 837 were PU students,
200 UET students, 200 GCU students, 208 University of Education students, 100
UVAS students, and 155 were Lahore College for Women University students. Daily Times
