New FUUAST VC optimistic: Admissions
Karachi, Feb 25, 2008: Dr Muhammad Qaiser, the new Vice Chancellor of the Federal Urdu
University of Arts Science and Technology (FUUAST), has faith in the new
projects that have been initiated for the university.
Dr Qaiser has been
brought to FUUAST after years of turmoil and negligence in the institution that
almost threw the academic activities in complete chaos. The university was
established by a presidential ordinance on November 13, 2002 by upgrading two
existing colleges, the Federal Urdu Science College and Federal Urdu College at
Karachi. President Pervez Musharraf was its first chancellor while Professor
Pirzada Qasim was the first vice chancellor of the university. The institute has
three campuses, two in Karachi (Gulshan-e-Iqbal and Abdul Haque) and one in
Islamabad.
"I have to work against time to improve the performance of
the university. The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has assured me that full
support will be accorded to me including financial matters for starting new
projects. These include buildings for the departments of Chemistry and
Electrical Engineering, two Project Cost-1 (PC-1) for the Abdul Haque Campus. We
have purchased 125 acres of land in Islamabad at a cost of Rs400 million. We
will purchase eight buses each for the three campuses," he said.
FUUAST
has a total enrolment of 13,000 students, 3,000 students at its Islamabad campus
and 1,000 students in the two campuses at Karachi. Dr Qaiser is wary of the
attitude of the teaching and non-teaching staff of the university who has been
unable to come out of the college culture. "They are unable to realise that a
university is different from a college. We have to promote research and bring
more depth to teaching. Thankfully, the realisation has begun to dawn on the
teachers and they have changed their teaching methods. We have 52 PhD teachers
in the three campuses and are in the process of hiring new PhD faculties while
training the existing teachers into becoming 'university teachers'. Some have
proceeded abroad to work for their PhDs while many others are enrolled in PhD
programmes at the University of Karachi (KU)," Dr Qaiser elaborated.
Dr
Qaiser, who is the Meritorious Professor of Botany, was the dean of the faculty
of Science at the University of Karachi (KU), Director Botanic garden and
Herbarium of the same university, said that the maiden convocation of the
university will be held in the last week of February, when degrees will be given
out to the two batches. "Yes, I want to see the university become a seat of
higher education that can vie with the prestigious universities of the country
and abroad. It is good that the administration of FUUAST, teachers and others
are extending their support to me. It will make my work easier," he
said.
The Abdul Haque campus of the university houses faculties of Social
Sciences including Commerce while the Gulshan campus has Science including
Pharmacy. "The medium of instruction in our university is Urdu as a student can
learn easily in his national language than a foreign one. We have created a
Bureau of Composition, Compilation and Translation which induces writers to pen
books in Urdu. We hope to provide good texts and reference books for our
students at affordable prices. Dr Aslam Farrukhi is looking after the Bureau,"
he explained.
Urdu University new admission date
Islamabad: The administration of
Federal Urdu University has extended the admission date of Spring Semester 2008
up to March 1, it has been learnt. Students can submit their admission forms to
get admission in the Spring Semester 2008 till March 1. The News
