HEC approves MS computer science programme for Virtual University
Islamabad, Feb 21, 2008: The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has approved a
project for introducing the MS degree programme at the Virtual University (VU),
Lahore. The project was approved in HEC's recent meeting.
The MS
programme will provide an in-depth study of computer science with focus on
specific sub-domains and it will be spread over two years consisting of four
semesters. 16 years of education is a prerequisite for admission to the
programme. The programme will be a combination of course work and research work.
Selection for the programme will be made through GRE test conducted by the
National Testing Service (NTS).
The VU commenced its four-year BS
programme in 2002 and now it has about 23,000 students. By the end of 2007, over
800 students had graduated from the university. The VU is the first university
in Pakistan to provide higher education through the free to air satellite
television broadcasts and internet.
The VU with its vast infrastructure
spread across the country in the form of its virtual campuses will launch the
programme at the VU campuses in Karachi, Rawalpindi, Islamabad Lahore and
Peshawar. The university will offer five scholarships in each batch.
A
rise in Pakistan's IT industry has been witnessed in the last few years. A
marked increase in software export figures is a clear indication of the
