3 IJT activists kicked out of PU hostel

Lahore, Feb 12, 2008: The Punjab University (PU) administration has suspended the hostel allotment of three Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) activists for beating two PU students.

The three IJT activists, Nawazish, Tahir and Gohar Nawaz, had beaten Wasim Akhtar Jatoi and Adnan, students of PU Hailey College on Monday. The victims accused IJT's nazim for Hostel 15 Muhammad Usman and his fellow activists of beating them (the victims).

PU IJT Nazim Rana Zahid said the people who had beaten Jatoi and Adnan were not IJT members.

Adnan said that Usman, IJT's nazim for Hostel 15, and a dozen of his friends, including Nawazish, Tahir and Nawaz, had beaten him when he was sitting with his cousin. He said his cousin was his senior in the college and he was taking notes from her. He said that IJT activists beat him and abused his cousin.

He said the IJT activists also told him to sign a written statement that he would not sit with her in the department again. He said the IJT activists also beat Jatoi who had come to his help. PU Hall Council Chairman Prof Dr Saeed Ahmad Nagra said that after a preliminary inquiry, the university had decided to suspend the hostel allotments of the three IJT members. He said a disciplinary committee had been formed which would report in 15 days for further action. When asked if the guilty students were IJT members, he replied, "I am not sure about that."
