Gloomy elections: KU BCS admission
Students gloomy about polls
Lahore, Feb 13, 2008: Students at the Punjab University are disillusioned with politics and
many say they will not be voting in next week's election.

academic at the university said the gloom on campus reflected despondency in the
rest of Pakistan ahead of the Feb 18 parliamentary elections. "It's a very
depressed generation," Umbreen Javed, the chairwoman of the political science
department, said.
"Generally the public, not only the young people, are
very depressed these days. You see what has been happening: the suicide attacks,
the energy crisis, the flour crisis and Benazir Bhutto's death. This is a very
gloomy picture." Many students at the country's oldest university said they had
no faith in politicians vying for power, and also feared the elections would be
rigged. "Most of us just want to boycott. We're not sure if they're going to be
fair, there's a lack of trust in the government," industrial engineering student
Nawaf Mehmud said while kicking around a football with some friends in the leafy
grounds. Mehmud said he would have supported PTI chief Imran Khan, if he were
running. The News
