Madaris not breeding terrorism
Islamabad, Feb 26, 2008: In India thousands of
Islamic clerics, Sheikh-ul-Hadith and other well-known Islamic figures on Monday
appealed to New Delhi to avoid branding madaris as the "breeding ground of
terrorism" during a congregation at Darul Uloom Deoband near Saharanpur.
The
Muslim leaders urged New Delhi in a voice vote not to defame their community by
labelling them as terrorists, Zee News reported.
Today's (Monday's) conclave
comes in the wake of resentment expressed by the 96-year-old rector of the Darul
Uloom Deoband, Maulana Magrubur Rahman last week. Rahman recently said, "The
madaris are not the breeding ground for terrorism and the campaign to malign the
religious education centres by the communal forces should be stopped". In
his statement, the top cleric has also alleged that the intelligence agencies
were working with vested interest and encouraging the hate agenda of the forces
against Islam.
During the conclave, the Muslim speakers unequivocally
condemned the acts of terror.
The participants also adopted a resolution
calling "for an end to the campaign of maligning the madaris as breeding grounds
of terrorism and dubbing the entire community as terrorists."
According to
reports, principals or mohatamim of 6,000 madaris attended the
convention.
The Muslims were also urged to avoid falling into the trap of
terrorists and indulging in anti-national activities. They also demanded New
Delhi to stop official agencies from harassing them.
The anti-terrorism
conclave, a first of its kind, was organised by Deobandi School, which has been
under the scanner of intelligence agencies ever since 9/11.
The
national-level convention was attended by clerics and ulemas from all sects,
including the Sunni Barelvi Muslims, Ahl-e-Hadith and Shia Muslims.
Other
prominent Muslim leaders who attended the conclave were Maulana Rabe Hasan
Nadvi, chairman of All India Muslim Personal Law Board, Maulana Jalaluddin Ansar
Umri, chairman of Jamaat-e-Islami, and Maulana Syed Mehmood Madni of Jamiat
Ulema Hind. App
