Model Universities Ordinance opposed

Karachi, Feb 07, 2008: University teachers have demanded immediate withdrawal of the Model Universities Ordinance (MUO) from the University of Balochistan. This, they said, is needed so that the Varsity may be governed by its rightful and legitimate act of governance adopted by the provincial legislature.

Addressing a Press conference at the Karachi Press Club on Wednesday, Prof Dr Abdul Qadeer of the University of Karachi, Prof Tausif Ahmed Khan of the Urdu University, Karachi, and Dr Agha Muhammad Nasir of Balochistan University condemned the government attempt to minimise the teachers' representation and involvement in the functioning and governance of the Balochistan University through undue promulgation of the MUO.

They said that after imposition of the MUO not only had the representation of the university teachers been minimised in the senate, syndicate, and academic council of the Balochistan varsity but the academic affairs of the university were also being conducted in a capricious and non-congenial manner.

They said that the teachers of the university who had been actively struggling against imposition of the MUO were being harassed by the varsity administration through various illegitimate measures so that they would conform to the whims of the authorities.

They demanded that various statutory and academic bodies of the university should be restored with the due representation of Varsity teachers so that the academic and related affairs of the varsity would be carried out in a more professional and rightful manner.

SU teachers not to perform election duties Hyderabad: The executive committee of the Sindh University Teachers Association (SUTA) in a meeting here on Wednesday resolved that the university teachers would not perform election duty due to teaching and research responsibilities and bitter experiences of the past.

Secretary SUTA Badar Soomro said in a press release that the meeting took a decision in this regard following the resolution of the Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academicians and Staff Association (FAPUASA) in its meeting held on January 12 and 13 in Peshawar.

Moreover, the teachers of the Sindh University were not ready for discriminatory attitude towards them in comparison to the attitude adopted with teachers in other cities and universities.

The executive committee also urged the vice chancellor to withdraw any such letter/ notification from the Election Commission. The News
