NAVTEC offering 216 training courses
Islamabad, Feb 16, 2008: National Vocational & Technical Education Commission is striving
to regulate, revamp and expand the existing TVET system in Pakistan by offering
216 different courses in various public sector training institutes, said Altaf M
Saleem, Chairman, NAVTEC while addressing Stakeholders' Conference here on
Friday.
The Chairman elaborated that under the PMSI (Prime Minister's Skill
Development Initiative), short-term skill development programs up to six months
were being offered through partner-institutions. "NAVTEC not only provides free
training but trainees are also being paid a stipend of Rs.2000 per month and
given tool-kits in certain trades", he added.
"The programmes focus on eight
priority sectors: Construction, Hospitality & Tourism, Services, Dairy &
Livestock, Skills for women, paramedics, IT & Telecommunication and Light
Engineering", the chairman said adding that NAVTEC was also funding training in
other trades that the market demanded.
He informed that the rationale behind
the initiative was to utilize the existing TVET infrastructure available with
public and private sectors training institutes instead of investing in brick and
mortar. "As part of government's general socio economic policies, NAVTEC is
placing more emphasis on public-private partnership and participation of
non-governmental organizations. As many as 2, 584 trainees have been trained and
4,450 are under training", he stated.
"Among these about 350 females have
completed training in Auto-CAD, office automation, beautician, accounts
assistant, front desk assistant and house keeping", he told adding that CISCO
certified courses/CCNA were being funded by NAVTEC and conducted at the
University of Arid Agriculture.
"This training program costs around Rs.45,
000 per trainee per course. But NAVTEC is running them with no cost to the
trainees. NAVTEC is also working with Army, Navy, Air Force and Police to use
their existing facilities and establish new ones to impart technical training to
as much people as possible", the chairman further informed.
The Executive
Director Muhammad Athar Tahir, DG Athar Mahmood Khan, Regional Director Muhammad
Zaheer, ILO representative, District Government's representatives, ICCI
representative, faculty members of technical training institutes and trainees
also attended the conference.
DG NAVTEC, Athar Mahmood said in his speech
that NAVTEC intended to hold road shows in eight countries of the Middle East to

Green Ribbon campaign held at LUMS
Lahore, Feb 16, 2008: The LUMS Environmental Action Forum (LEAF) held a
three-day Green Ribbon Campaign to stress the need for an environment-friendly
attitude from February 12 to February 14 at LUMS.
The students took the
concept of the green ribbon for environment from the pink ribbon, which is the
symbol for breast cancer and the red ribbon, the symbol for HIV/AIDS. During the
campaign, the students sold green ribbons, which were worn by students, faculty
and staff. They also sold t-shirts, which became an instant hit. The students
distributed pamphlets describing the environmental situation in Pakistan
vis-à-vis the water crisis and energy shortage, along with tips for students to
ensure a more environment-friendly attitude at home and on campus. They also put
up a Green Wall on which the students left messages on how to make a
difference.
The LEAF showed Al-Gore's famous movie An Inconvenient Truth.
The campaign ended with the students standing in the form of a ribbon on the
LUMS campus to pledge to protect the environment. Daily Times
