Admissions in NCA
Rawalpindi, Feb 15, 2008: The Department of Theatre, National College of Arts, Rawalpindi
Campus, has announced admissions in different disciplines here on Thursday, say
a press release.
The admissions have been announced for professional
diploma in playwriting (March-December 2008), Maskhara (June 2-July 11) and
workshops including Acting (March 3-21), Dance and Movement (March 24-April 11),
Theatre Sound and Music (April 14-May 4) and Production Skills (May 12-29).
The prerequisite for the discipline of Diploma in Playwriting is 4-year
BA-MA. The applications for admission should include curriculum vitae, proposal
outline of original play to be developed (one page maximum) and it should reach
the NCA by February 20. Interviews will be held on February 25.
The
prerequisite for the discipline of Maskhara and workshops is that the candidates
should at least be FA or have completed their 'A' level. They could apply by
February 20. The auditions or interviews would be held on February 25.
NCA graduates bring fresh perspective to art
Islamabad: An exhibition of paintings, sculptures and installations by
five fresh graduates of Lahore's National College of Arts opened at Rohtas
Gallery here on Thursday.
Available on display is the thesis work of
Kiran Shah, Tahira Noreen, Sahar Noon, Sara Khan and Saba Mansoor. The gallery's director Naeem Pasha, conceded that Rohtas had gone
into hibernation of sorts, primarily because of his preoccupation with the
National Art Gallery over the last 18 months or so. "We are restarting the
season with the same vigour and would like our patrons to visit the gallery for
the first of a dozen exhibitions scheduled for the year," he said.
Kiran
Shah and Tahira Noreen were the only participating artists available at the
exhibition's opening. "My work is about experiencing constant duality, where you
cannot decide on the single nature of anything," Kiran said while sharing her
work with this correspondent.
Kiran has contributed two
sculptures-cum-installations to the show. Interestingly, while one of the
acrylic pieces is her first, the other one is the last and as such, the most
mature and well thought out. Titled 'Read,' the latter talks about sweetness and
disturbance. It is seductive and inviting on the one hand, and repellent on the
other. The artist has used 10 sheets of acrylic - each inscribed with an
incomprehensible terminology written with the help of a red marker. The
inability of the viewer to decipher the writing arouses irritability. As one
gets closer to the sculpture-cum-installation, a sweet scent and the sight of
strawberry sauce dripping all the way down from the sculpture to the floor greet
the nose, as if it were blood symbolising pain.
In her second piece,
which is titled 'In There,' Kiran has tried to show the difference between clear
and unclear. She has created layers and layers of boxed with the help of
acrylic. Even though the boxes are apparently transparent, there comes a point
where in spite of the transparency, there is haze only. The artist wanted the
piece to be suspended in the air but since she was not for using fish wire, she
opted for a squared mirror base, which also reflects the surroundings. "When you
look at your reflection in the mirror, you may see the material and the
spiritual as well," Kiran mused, leaving it up to the viewers to interpret her
work in their own way. Japanese artist Yayoikusama, who also used similar
materials in her work, inspires Kiran.
Tahira Noreen explained her work
as reflecting her experience of travelling. "It depicts movement and the rapid
change of images, thoughts, sounds and sights, which inform our senses during
the medium of travel," she said. The artist has used acrylic, tapes, paper and
photographs on board. Living in a hostel, she had to constantly travel back and
forth, hence cars, rickshaws, buses and planes all moving in opposite
directions.
"After having graduated, I was very confused about what the
future holds for me," Kiran confided. The artist uses layers upon layers of
acrylic sheets with personal notes glued on the sheet in the background, and
pieces of calendar on the forefront. She has relied on primary colours such as
red, yellow and blue to express what she termed as her primary concerns. In one
of her untitled works, Kiran has effectively articulated the memories of her
July 2007 visit to Karachi.
Sahar Noon believes that the reality of the
object world is about the fallibility of perception and the strange role of
illusion. The unknown could be the relationship between the eye and brain, dream
and unconscious, of the eruption of images when we fall asleep or our delusional
readings of the paranormal world.
Sara Khan has brought mixed media and
oil on canvas paintings to the show, while Saba Mansoor has experimented with
collagraphs and digital prints. "My brain ... a washing machine. Everything ...
so temporary. Indifference ... the only way?" is how Sara explains the content
of her art. In an equally precise written statement, Saba says her work is about
"preserving, hiding, keeping, tying, and wrapping." The News
