Lecturers assured of problems' solution
The Punjab University Vice Chancellor has given an assurance to lecturers for
the solution of their problems, including PhD foreign scholarship and regular
appointment of contract lecturers.
VC Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran hosted a
dinner for lecturers here on New Campus last night to know about the lecturers'
problems so that steps could be taken for redressing their grievances. Member
Syndicate (Lecturer Cadre) Syed Zia Ullah Shah, Dr Mujahid Ali Mansoori,
Chairman Hall Council Prof Dr Saeed Ahmad Nagra and Prof Dr Najma Najam were
also present.
A group of lecturers told the VC that now they could
discuss their problems with him openly and freely since there was no military
Vice Chancellor in the varsity.
A lecturer of Institute of Education and
Research asked the VC that new lecturers must be provided an opportunity to
visit foreign countries instead of giving another opportunity to those who had
already enjoyed foreign visit. The VC said that the same was part of policy. To
an objection raised by contract lecturers, Dr Kamran said he would conduct
separate meetings with contract lecturers, female lecturers and PhD faculty
members.
The VC stressed that all lecturers must appear in HEC exam for
PhD scholarship, as he wanted maximum university lecturers to earn PhD degree,
and university administration would fully cooperate with them in this regard. On
the occasion, Syed Zia Ullah Shah especially thanked the VC for extending 5
years to the age limit for foreign scholarship for university teachers.
Collaboration with foreign varsity urged The Punjab University
should arrange a collaboration with the University of St Andrew, Scotland, for
PhD, Post Doctorate, promotion of research, career advisory and other programmes
of higher education.
Prof Dr Najma Najam of Department of Psychology
& Applied Psychology and Prof Dr Iftikhar Baloch presented these suggestions
to Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran in a briefing. Both the professors
have returned recently after attending a PhD training workshop held at St Andrew
University, Scotland. Registrar Prof Dr Muhammad Naeem Khan was also present.
Dr Najma Najam said that, after successful dialogues with St Andrew
University, 125 Pakistani students would be sent to St Andre University for PhD
in the field of Economics, Finance, Management, International Relations,
Psychology, English and Mathematics.
She further briefed the VC that the
subject of Psychology was not included in this list but, due to strong arguments
of their delegation, Psychology was also included in this scholarship scheme.
Dr Najma Najam said the Higher Education Commission would cooperate in
these projects and, soon, PC-I would be submitted to the HEC.
She also
stressed collaboration in Philosophy, History, Persian and English literature
along with professional education. The workshop in Scotland was started on 13
January and delegations of the Punjab University, Peshawar University,
Quaid-e-Azam University and Government College University, Lahore, attended the
workshop.
