PU seeping underpass needs timely plug
Lahore, Feb 19, 2008: The Punjab University (PU)
underpass that started seeping a couple of days ago has not been repaired so
far.
The PU administration said they had complained to the Communication
and Works (C&W) Department about the seepage.
PU Project Director
Sheikh Muhammad Ali said they had complained to the department about the seepage
and a team also visited the underpass. He said while quoting the team that it
was not a "major problem" and they would repair the underpass after the
elections.
Abdul Karim Kanju, engineer of Hasnain Contex Company, which
constructed the underpass, said they were busy due to the elections and would
repair the underpass after the elections. He said the bridge would not collapse
because the company had used "excellent material". He said he knew about the
seepage and that it was not a matter of grave concern. Kanju said the seepage
was not because of the canal water. He said that during the recent cleaning of
the canal, the workers damaged a few pipes that ran under water and they were
leaking into the bridge.
On February 16, Muhammad Arshad Butt, PU
hostels' security supervisor, had said that the bridge had started
leaking the first day the canal was opened. He said he had complained about it
to the PU project director.
A PU security official said that
the seeping had increased. PU spokesman Dr Mujahid Mansoori said that the PU administration was aware of the issue and it would take action in
this regard.
The C&W Department spokesman said the PU underpass was
not seeping and the reports published were not true. He said on Sunday the
department had well maintained all underpasses.
However, on February 16,
C&W Executive Engineer Sarfaraz Butt had confirmed that the department had
received the PU's complaint. He had said the department was thinking of
repairing the leakage without stopping the canal water. He also said, "I think
the seepage is not very dangerous." During the construction of the three
underpasses, one of them had collapsed suddenly and was immediately
reconstructed, but it started leaking three months ago. It was repaired and now
the second bridge has started leaking. Civil engineers and construction experts
said that if the underpass was not repaired immediately, it could
collapse. Daily Times
