PU underpass leakage: Degree standards
Second PU underpass leaks in three months
Lahore, Feb 16, 2008: An underpass at the Punjab University (PU), which links the Institute of
Communication Studies and the hostels from under the Canal, has started leaking,
days after the canal was opened again. Another intra-PU underpass had leaked
about three months ago.
During the construction of the three underpasses,
one of them had collapsed suddenly and was immediately reconstructed, but it
started leaking three months ago. It was repaired and now the second bridge has
started leaking. Civil engineers and construction experts said that
if the underpass was not repaired immediately, it could collapse. The Punjab
government had paid for the constructions.
Abdul Karim Kanju, engineer of
Husnain Cotex Limited, which constructed the underpass, said the seepage was
"not a big issue". He said he knew about the seepage and that it was not a
matter of grave concern. He said the bridge would not collapse because the
company had used "excellent material" in the construction. Kanju said the
seepage was not because of canal water. He said that during the recent cleaning
of the canal, the workers damaged a few pipes that ran under water and they were
leaking into the bridge. He said the seepage would be repaired in a few
days.
Muhammad Arshad Butt, PU hostels' security supervisor, said that the bridge had started leaking the first day the canal was opened. He said
he had complained about it to the PU project director.
PU Resident
Officer Dr Bashir Ahmed criticised Kanju for saying that the seepage was not
dangerous. He said the administration and students were concerned about the
matter and would take proper action against this.
PU Project Director
Sheikh Muhammad Ali said that the university had complained to the
Communication and Works (C&W) Department about the seepage.
C&W
Executive Engineer Sarfaraz Butt confirmed that the department had received the
PU's complaint. He said the department was thinking of repairing the leakage
without having to stop the canal water. He said, "I think the seepage is not
very dangerous." He also said the repair would start in a few days.
The
PU students slammed the company and the PU administration for "use of
substandard material in the construction of the underpass". They said many
students now preferred to use the overhead bridges to cross the canal rather
than the underpasses even if it took them a long time.
Ahsan Alvi, a
student at the PU, said the leaking of another underpass within three months was
disturbing. He said the students did not believe the construction company which
said the material used in the construction was not substandard.
Naveed
Alam, a PU student, said he was the first to notice the water seeping and told
the management immediately. He said the leakage had increased on Friday
(yesterday).
PU student Amir Ilyas said the seepage was a serious issue.
He said the water could cause an electric short circuit in the underpass's
wiring, which might trigger some unwanted chain of events.
