Private schools issue 22-point Charter of Demand to Govt

Lahore, Feb 23, 2008: Private schools have decided to observe 2008 as the Year of Education and in this regard issued a 22-point Charter of Demand to the government for the uplift of educational standards.

According to a press release issued by the All Pakistan Private Schools Welfare Association (APPSWA) on Friday, this was unanimously decided in a meeting of educationists and members of the general body held under the chairmanship of Central President Syed Zulqarnain Shah.

The general body of APPSWA and educationists jointly favoured and agreed on the Charter of Demand and assured the chairman their cooperation in this regard.

Shah said that the main objective of presenting the Charter of Demand was to seek the government's help by pointing out problems being faced in the promotion of education so that the country could join the rank of developed nations.

They insisted that educationists and representatives of private schools be included when preparing educational policies or legislation in the education sector. They also stressed the adoption of comprehensive measures for the enhancement of the literacy rate of the country. The meeting jointly decided to present a 22-point Charter of Demand that includes compulsory Quran education, a teachers' think tank, and the establishment of a primary education commission and to declare the education sector tax-free.

They insisted for an objective examination system, a raise in the educational budget up to five percent of the total GDP and compulsory education up to matriculation. They further demanded the establishment of an educational TV channel, compulsory health and civic education, withdrawal of all taxes from the paper industry, and the restarting of the Maktab School System.
