Private schools issue 22-point Charter of Demand to Govt
Lahore, Feb 23, 2008: Private schools have decided to
observe 2008 as the Year of Education and in this regard issued a 22-point
Charter of Demand to the government for the uplift of educational
standards.
According to a press release issued by the All Pakistan
Private Schools Welfare Association (APPSWA) on Friday, this was unanimously
decided in a meeting of educationists and members of the general body held under
the chairmanship of Central President Syed Zulqarnain Shah.
The general
body of APPSWA and educationists jointly favoured and agreed on the Charter of
Demand and assured the chairman their cooperation in this regard.
Shah
said that the main objective of presenting the Charter of Demand was to seek the
government's help by pointing out problems being faced in the promotion of
education so that the country could join the rank of developed
nations.
They insisted that educationists and representatives of private
schools be included when preparing educational policies or legislation in the
education sector. They also stressed the adoption of comprehensive measures for
the enhancement of the literacy rate of the country. The meeting jointly decided
to present a 22-point Charter of Demand that includes compulsory Quran
education, a teachers' think tank, and the establishment of a primary education
commission and to declare the education sector tax-free.
They insisted
for an objective examination system, a raise in the educational budget up to
five percent of the total GDP and compulsory education up to matriculation. They
further demanded the establishment of an educational TV channel, compulsory
health and civic education, withdrawal of all taxes from the paper industry, and
the restarting of the Maktab School System. Daily Times
241 female teachers promoted
Islamabad: Under the package of former CM Punjab, the Education Department
Rawalpindi has issued the promotion notification of 241 women teachers to
Grade-17 and 18.
It is worth mentioning here that the promotion
notification for male teachers was issued three weeks ago while, the
notification for the promotion of female teachers was stopped.
The
notification has been issued by EDO Education, District Rawalpindi, Chaudhary
Muhammad Yousaf.
According to the notification, 66 women teachers got
promotion in Grade-18 while 138 in Grade-17.
The promotion notification
for primary school teachers is still in doldrums, while, the male teachers, were
promoted in next grades.
The office-bearers of the teachers' union while
commending on the issue demanded the issuance of notification for other
cadres.
According to sources in the Education Department Rawalpindi, the
objections, raised on the seniority list of some cadres of teachers, would be
removed and the notification for all the cadres would be issued on February 28. The News
