ZMU to get more land in Gadap for Edu City
Karachi: In Karachi development is not
always welcomed wholeheartedly simply because of suspicions or a heavily
ingrained sense of deprivation. Once again, it appears that this classic problem
has cropped up, this time in Gadap, where the government wants to build an
education city but the local residents are wondering what it will mean for them,
if anything at all.
The Malir Development Authority (MDA) is ready to
approve a plan proposing the construction of a new medical university and
hospital on the 25 acres allocated for the Education City, put forward by the
Ziauddin Medical University (ZMU).
In 2001, the Sindh government had
marked the land for the education city, of which about 2,000 acres have already
been allotted. The provincial government has around 9,000 acres. There are over
50 villages in the vicinity nearly 400 years old. The land is mostly used for
grazing.
For the ZMU land, the general public has been asked to contact
the department with any objections to this layout plan within the next 15 days,
according to Abid Qazi, who is with the MDA Town Planning
Department.
This may be a problem as it was discovered from the
Darsano Union Council Nazim Mujahid Ahmed Jokhio. He claimed that the residents
of Deh Chuhar have had reservations about the education city project. "Deh
Chuhar's 9,441 acres originally belonged to the Forest Department but the Board
of Revenue illegally obtained it and marked it for an education city, giving it
to the City District Government Karachi in 2001," he said. There are people in
the area who can prove this even though they have been retired from different
posts in the forest department.
There is a perception that the Sindh
government has ignored the locals while making crucial decisions about the land
in the area. "We have no objection to allotting this land for educational and
health institutes but we have proof that 26 illegally founded organizations have
also been allotted land in this scheme," the UC nazim said.
Jokhio, who
lives in the affected area, said that some of the institutes have begun
construction but the locals have not been provided any jobs, not even menial or
non-skilled ones. That is where the sense of deprivation comes from. "If the
management of these institutes continues to ignore the local people, there will
certainly be confrontations," he predicted.
Gadap Town Nazim Ghulam
Murtaza Baloch said that this issue has been raised at every
possible forum, but it seems as if no one is willing to show sympathy toward the
poor people living in the outskirts of Karachi.
"The government continues
to allot land to different academic and healthcare institutions instead of
facilitating local people, which will only further the rifts between the two
parties," he said. Daily Times
