Election holidays: US scholarships: PU anniversary
Polls holidays on 18th &19th
Lahore, Feb 12, 2008: Public and private sector schools, colleges and
universities across the province will remain closed on 18th and 19th February
2008 on the eve of General Elections. According to a DGPR handout on the eve of
General Elections there will be no academic activity in any educational
institutions in Punjab including schools, colleges and universities both in
public and private sector on 18th and 19th February 2008 to facilitate the
performance of elections duty assigned to the teachers of the Education
Department.
230 students, scholars to get US scholarships
Lahore: Dr Grace Clark, executive director of the US Educational
Foundation Pakistan, on Monday attended a meeting of the educationists who had
won US Fulbright scholarships and were now serving in various educational
institutions in Pakistan. The meeting was also held at the Punjab University and
was attended by PU Vice-Chancellor Dr Mujahid Kamran,

Linkages Dr Najma Najam, Prof Dr Naeem Khan and Dr Mujahid Ali Mansoori.Speaking
on the occasion, Dr Clark said her organisation would send 150 Pakistani
students for masters and 80 scholars for PhD in the US in the current year. The
organisation would also help those Pakistani students in getting US scholarships
who had passed TOFEL and GRE and were eligible for admission in US universities,
she said. Dr Mujahid Kamran and praised the services of Dr Grace and stressed on
increase in Pak-US educational cooperation.
PU to celebrate 125th anniversary Lahore: The Punjab
University will hold conferences, seminars and other activities to celebrate its
125th anniversary. According to a press release issued on Monday, a meeting was
held in this regard, under the chairmanship of Vice-Chancellor Dr Mujahid
Kamran, at the Institute of Biochemistry and Biotechnology on Monday. Registrar
Dr Naeem Khan, Prof Dr Arif Butt, Prof Dr Najma Najam, deans and heads of
departments and institutes were also present on the occasion. The meeting passed
a resolution to celebrate the anniversary of the university with fervour as it
was the oldest seat of learning in the subcontinent, and it produced great
scholars during last 125 years. After listening to the suggestions from various
teachers, the VC asked the heads of all departments and institutes to compile a
brief history of their respective departments and institutes.
PU awards PhD degrees Lahore: The
Punjab University awarded two PhD degrees in different subjects on Monday.
Muhammad Shafiq Malik was awarded a PhD degree in the subject of Islamic Studies
after the approval of his thesis ëThe Effects of Jehadi Tehreekat in
Aasar-e-Hazar'. He completed his research under the supervision of Dr Hamidullah
Abdul Qadir of the Department of Islamic Studies. Meanwhile, a PhD degree was
also awarded to Shaukat Ali in the subject of Zoology after the approval of his
thesis titled ëFeed Restriction and Levels of Aluminium Sulphate and Zinc Oxide
in Inducing Molting and the Subsequent Performance in Japanese Quailí. His
supervisor was Prof Dr Abdul Majeed Cheema, Chairman Faculty of Biotechnology
and Informatics, Balochistan University of Information Technology and Management
Sciences, Quetta. The News
