260 GCU students can't appear in exam
Lahore: About 260 students of BA and BSc Honour Programme 2008-12 have been
declared 'ineligible' to appear in their first semester examination for not
fulfilling the required attendance rate fixed by the Government College
Sources in GCU told scribe on Monday that 1,117
students got admission in the said programme and more than 260 students were
dropped on the pretext that their attendance rate was below the required 80 per
cent which was must to appear in the examination.
As per the notification
issued by the GCU administration, the students who could not fulfill the
required percentage lectures in more than two courses are 'ineligible' to appear
in exams and they may seek re-admission in the session 2009-13.
The second part of the notification speaks, "beside these 260 educatees, all
other students who have not fulfilled minimum attendance requirement in one or
two courses will reappear in respective courses in the summer semester June-July
When contacted GCU Registrar, Sahibzada Faisal Khursheed said out of
these 260 students, 66 fall in the category of low attendance in one or two
courses and now they have no other option except to reappear in Jun/July 2009
while the same number of students have been given go ahead after removal of
minor objections and all the rest of students were found absent from the classes
for the last two to three months, which reflected that they have not got
admission in engineering, medical and other professional courses. GCU Registrar
further said as they have paid fees therefore university was bound to declare
their status. He said, "we have not expelled them rather they have been given
chance to improve their performance."
It is worth mentioning that in the recent past GCU administration has also
declared its 57 students of BA and BSc (Honours) academic year-II semester-III
session (2007-2011) "disqualified" to sit for final examination 2009 due to
three reasons - lack of attendance, non-payment of fees and those who have left
the university. A student seeking anonymity said eligibility can not be defined
in general terms. One who is eligible in one academic institution may not be so
in another. Academic eligibility, in fact, varies in different institutions. The
registrar said that the said system was not new but it was introduced in 2004
four years back.
