Book-lovers come back for more
LAHORE, Feb 27(Daily Times): Crowds filled the Fortress Stadium Expo Centre on the penultimate day of
the Lahore International Book Fair 2007 on Monday.
The visitors were
pleasantly surprised by the variety of books available at the book fair and
bought books offered by local and foreign publishers at discounted prices. The
number of people on the second-last day was larger than on any of the previous
days. More people said that they had purchased Indian books, because they were
cheaper than books offered by local or other foreign publishers.
A large
number of local and foreign publishers have set up more than 250 stalls at the
fair. Stalls offering books especially for schoolchildren have also been set up.
The British Council has set up a stall at the fair, offering free literature and
information about education in the UK. Information on short courses offered by
the British Council is also available.
The puppet show organised by the
Rafi Peer Theatre Group, again attracted a large number of people, especially
children, on Monday. The puppet shows have highlighted the importance of gaining
knowledge. Many stalls have arranged art competitions for children.
Syed
Khalid Akhlaq Gillani, the education secretary, was also seen browsing books at
the book fair. He said that the fair was a great event for the people of the
city to find books on every imaginable subject under one roof. Students should
come and take advantage of the variety at the fair, he added. He praised the
cheaper Indian books and said he hoped that the organisers would offer greater
discounts in the future so that everyone could purchase a book.
The
manager of a stall told Daily Times that the number of visitors had been huge,
especially in the evening. He said many people were simply enjoying the fair and
visiting it daily. "The fair has attracted thousands of people since its
inauguration on February 22," he added. A Punjab University student, Ali, said
that the fair was a great boon for book lovers. Tuesday (today) will be the last
day of the fair.
