Cuba gets first Muslim medical students from Pakistan
ISLAMABAD, Feb 19 (NNI): The first group of 27 Pakistani students has arrived in
Cuba and 368 more students will also follow them, said education official Dr S
Mehmood Raza, an education official, during an orientation session organised by
the Higher Education Commission (HEC) on Friday for students wants to study in
Cuba.
Gustavo Machín Gomez, ambassador of the Republic of Cuba, was the
chief guest on the occasion. Addressing the students, the Cuban ambassador said
that Cuba had offered 1,000 medical scholarships to Pakistani students, adding
that the students would receive education from medical institutes recognised by
the World Health Organisation (WHO) and related international organisations. He
said that over 29,000 Cuban health workers were working in more than 60
countries. "Pakistani students will receive the best medical education and will
be among the 27,000 other international students belonging to around 120
countries studying in Cuba," he said, adding, "it is the first time Cuba is
going to receive Muslim students and the people and government of Cuba are
excited about this."
He said that "maximum facilities" would be provided
to Pakistani students, including complete religious and cultural freedom, halal
food and separate places for offering prayers. HEC official Dr Mukhtar Ahmed
thanked the Cuban government for offering the medical scholarships for Pakistani
students. "This collaboration will become a milestone in academic links between
the two countries," he said.
