HEC to set up engineering universities in Sindh
Karachi, Feb 7(The Nation)- Higher Education Commission will set up four engineering
universities worth Rs 140 billion in Sindh.
Prof Atta-ur-Rahman, the federal
Minister and Chairman HEC, said this addressing an official meeting regarding
setting up of more universities in Sindh held at Sindh Chief Minister's House on
Tuesday.
He said that three universities would be set up at Karachi and one
would be set up at Jamshoro in collaboration with France, Italy and South
Korea.
"Each university will be set up at a cost of Rs 35 to 40 billion,
covering 600 acres of land, out of which 300 acre land is specific for the
university campus only while a Technology Parks will be set up at rest of the
land. These universities will be functional in seven or eight years in
association with the advanced universities of France, Italy and South Korea. In
this connection, an agreement with South Korea will be inked in this month
(February), while Italy and France have signed agreement with the commission,"
he said. >He said that the provincial governments would have to provide piece
of lands and other facilities of infrastructure, while the commission would bear
other expenditures in this regard. He added that these universities would have
rector and faculty of partner countries initially. He remarked that the
establishment of nine universities would bring about progress in the
country.
Giving the details about the programme, Advisor Higher Education Dr
Haroon Ahmed said that the objective was that to promote engineering education
in the country so that young generation could obtain high tech education with
employment.
The programme of setting up such universities will not only
create employment in the country but also help in country's defence and
industrial progress.
French university will be functional at temporary campus
in Karachi from the September of this year, where initially MSc classes will be
held, two other universities will be set up near to Steel Town.
At the
occasion, Provincial Minister for Education and Literacy Dr Hamida Khuhro
praised the efforts of Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim in promotion of
education sector in the province. She said that Dr Arbab wanted to establish
universities in the other parts of the province so that the people could obtain
quality education on easy access.
The officials of the HEC assured that in
second phase HEC would set up more university in the other parts of Sindh.
Former VC Alama Iqbal Open University, In-charge French University Project Dr
Altaf, Chief Secretary Sindh Fazal-ul-Rahman, Additional Chief Secretary SNGA
Nazar Hussain Mahar other higher officials were also present.
