GCU VC granted four-year extension
LAHORE, Feb 28(Daily Times): Prof Dr Khalid Aftab was
granted an extension of four years as the vice-chancellor of the Government
College University (GCU) on Tuesday.
The Vice-Chancellor (VC) Search
Committee had recommended three candidates – the incumbent Dr Khalid Aftab, the
Punjab University School of Biological Sciences' director Dr Abdul Rauf Shakoori
and the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education chairman, Dr Muhammad
Zakariya Butt.
The chief minister interviewed the candidates on January
20 and Governor Khalid Maqbool confirmed the re-appointment of Dr Khalid Aftab
as GCU VC on Tuesday.
The government has now selected six of the seven
vice-chancellors for general universities of the province. These include Prof Dr
Bushra Mateen for the Lahore College for Women University, Prof Dr Munawwar
Mirza for the University of Education, Dr Arif Ali Zaidi for GCU Faisalabad,
Prof Dr Muhammad Zafarullah for BZU Multan, Prof Dr Akram Chaudhry for
University of Sargodha and Dr Khalid Aftab for GCU Lahore.
The chief
minister still has to interview candidates for the post of Fatima Jinnah Women
University (FJWU), Rawalpindi. The varsity's current VC, Prof Dr Najma Najam,
has questioned the integrity of the selection process alleging that the
Education Department has wrongly tried to exclude her name from consideration.
Dr Khalid Aftab said on Tuesday that his new appointment was both a
privilege and an immense challenge. "I look forward to continuing to lead GCU."
A bio of Dr Khalid Aftab: Dr Khalid Aftab completed his MSc and PhD in
economics from the Strathclyde University, UK. He has published 48 research
papers and supervised several MSc, MPhil and PhD theses.
Dr Khalid Aftab
was the last principal of the Government College Lahore and the first
vice-chancellor of the Government College University. He served as the head of
the Economics Department from 1991 to 1993 and as principal from 1993 to 2002.
Dr Khalid Aftab taught at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow from
1982 to 1984. He has also served as consultant to the United Nations Development
Programme and the International Labour Organisation. He was also a member of the
panel of experts for the 8th and 9th five-year development plans.
The
government of Pakistan has awarded him two civil awards in recognition of his
contributions to education. These are the Aizaz-e-Fazilat (twice in 1994 and
2000) and the Pride of Performance in 2002.
