Where are the libraries?
Islamabad, Feb(The News): The ultimate fall of a nation does not depend on the number of weapons it
possesses but by the lack of education and ignorance of its people. The downfall of the Muslims started in
1258 AD when Halakoo Khan burnt down hundreds of libraries thus obliterating the
precious works of scholars in almost every conceivable branch of
learning.
It all bottles down to the truth of the absence of any credible
educational infrastructure in our country. Libraries are the heart of any
developed nations' educational infrastructure. However, it is an irony that no
allocation has been made in our subsequent budgets for the establishment of
libraries. The main motivation behind the making of few libraries in the country
has always been the 'kick backs' involved in lavish constructions, baroque
buildings and the furnishing.
The congress library in Washington DC is
the largest in the world and has more than 500 miles of shelves holding millions
of books and treasures; just an example of a successful nation owing it's
success to quality education and the accessibility of common man to the
knowledge databases. According to a survey the total number of books in all the
libraries in Pakistan runs only in a few lacs.
Sometime back it was
reported in the press that Shah Lateef Bhitai library situated in old Golimar
has been converted into an administrative office for the union council. There is
certainly no doubt that the same will be converted pretty soon into a shopping
centre or commercial plaza. For a nation with its priorities elsewhere, spending
on libraries with no budget allocation is understandable. Why waste our precious
resources on buying 'books' when we can easily procure 'bombs'.
