Delay in submitting PU plagiarism report
LAHORE, Feb 8(Daily Times): The Higher Education Commission (HEC) is
contemplating action against Punjab University for allegedly delaying a report
on six university teachers reportedly involved in plagiarism. The deadline for
submission had been January 31, HEC director Dr Sohail Naqvi said on
Wednesday.
He said he would meet HEC chairman Dr Attaur Rehman and
discuss the issue with him. He said the HEC had decided to penalise the PU
administration if it continued delaying the submission.
PU has formed an
internal committee to investigate the allegations of plagiarism.
Dr
Sohail said the HEC was disappointed with PU because the university had not
taken adequate steps to cope with reports of plagiarism by university
teachers.
The HEC director also said Government College University had
asked the commission to help it expose plagiarism by students and teachers. He
said he would not say yet on what the HEC would do to PU, but that the
commission had the authority to deal with such issues.
He said that
although the commission could not interfere in PU's affairs and directly ask the
inquiry committee about the report, it was capable of punishing the university
and a decision in this respect would be announced soon.
An HEC official
said the commission was authorised to de-recognise degrees granted by PU and
that the university would lose its status as one of the best research
institutions in Pakistan. He said the commission also had the authority to
restrict the university's funding, which would affect research work and other
projects being undertaken by PU.
The HEC chairman has written a letter to
PU vice chancellor Arshad Mehmood, urging him to take action against the
teachers accused of plagiarism. PU registrar Dr Naeem Khan said the internal
committee had failed to meet the deadline, but that the delay could have been
caused by Muharram holidays. He said he would ask the committee to hurry up its
report.
