Academic session in doldrums... again
Karachi, Jan 08, 2008: The caretaker Sindh education minister, Shujaat Beg, is in a
quandary over whether the new academic session should start from April 1. A
meeting has been called Wednesday, where the minister will review a decision
made two weeks ago to start academic sessions from April 1.
In a steering
committee meeting on December 26, Beg had announced the revival of old academic
calendar according to which the academic session would commence on the first of
April. The decision, Beg said, was a result of recommendations received from a
number of stakeholders, including parents, teachers and students.
The
minister, however, is reportedly still undecided about whether to continue with
his previous decision or to withdraw it. The latter option is more likely to be
taken during the meeting that has been called today.
A divide has also
erupted on the issue between the two private school management associations,
with one association supporting the minister's December 26 decision, and the
other calling for the decision to be deferred till 2009. The education minister
has therefore called a meeting today, ostensibly to clear up all confusion. "The
matter will be discussed, and a decision will be finalised. The News
