Academics most affected during '07
Karachi, Jan 04, 2008: The previous year has marked the highest academic loss to
the students of different educational institutions in the city due to incessant
riots, lawlessness and the bloody turmoil causing unusual suspension of academic
activities in the city.
As per rough estimation, the private and government
educational institutions in the city had to announce more than 40 unprecedented
holidays The Nation learned on Tuesday. The experts have also expressed their
concern over the unusual holidays and said that unexpected incidents and natural
calamities had caused immense academic loss to the students.
Several
institutions of higher learning, especially the Karachi University had to suffer
a lot of difficulties throughout the year 2007 with regard to organizing
national and international seminars, symposiums, workshops, scientific sessions
and conferences due to political turmoil in the city which suspended life in the
city umpteen times.
The Karachi University remained closed for 33 official
and unofficial holidays from September 1 to October 22, 2007 with a result of
immense academic loss for the students by badly disturbing their semester system
that started on July 16 and scheduled to end in mid November 2007, The Nation
was told. The KU observed as many as 27 official holidays during the said
period. Moreover, from September 5 to 12, the classes at the KU were remained
suspended in connection with the Student's Week, for extracurricular
activities.
The university administration also announced 3-day closure due
to a clash between two rival wings of the students on September 12 to avoid any
untoward situation.
Following the said clash and minibus incident on October
13 that killed 7 people including 4 KU students also caused nearly 7-day
suspension of academic activities at the university. The said clash between the
two students organisations, erupted during the 'Students Week' was considered as
a major cause for the loss of academic session.
On the other hand,
torrential rains with thunderstorm uprooted more than 40 trees and badly
affected the power supply system of the KU as the roads inside the university
were blocked causing the suspension of academic activities.
And, now, the
tragic incident at Liaquat Bagh Rawalpindi on Dec 27, in which Ms Benazir Bhutto
was brutally assassinated, caused more impediments for educational activities in
the city. The Nation
