Discarding of books: KU VC takes notice
Karachi, Jan 28, 2008: Prof Pirzada Qasim, Vice-Chancellor, Karachi University, has
taken notice of the alleged selling of the books to junk dealers on the orders
of Dr Qasim Mehdi, Director of the Khan Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic
Engineering (KIBGE). Qasim has asked Dr Fahim Uddin, Dean of the Faculty of
Science, to check if the books were really trash or in good
condition.
The action came after the publishing of a news item in the
media based on a press release issued by the Karachi University Teachers Society
(KUTS) in which Dr Aqeel Ahmed and Dr Abid Hasnain, Present and Secretary of
KUTS, had condemned the unethical and unprecedented action taken by the director
of KIBGE. Prof Qasim has also asked the heads of the departments of
Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Physiology and others to see if the
discarded books could be of any help to their students. In that case, these
books should be kept in the seminar libraries.
Dr Abid Hasnain, said on Saturday, mused on the fate of the seven trucks full of
books that had already left the campus before action by the KU administration on
a tip-off from KUTS. "It is good that the VC has 'taken notice' of the incident
but what about the books? How would these books retrieved?
Dr Fahim
Uddin, who is entrusted with the task of retrieving and checking the books to
ascertain their condition, admitted that he would not be able to do anything
till Monday. "I am in the University of Sindh, Jamshoro, attending the Selection
Board meeting of the university and can only take steps after coming to
Karachi", he informed when contacted.
