FUUAST classes suspended due to lack of competent faculty

Islamabad, Jan 24, 2008: Classes at the Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology (FUUAST) Electrical Department will remain suspended for a month. The classes have been suspended at the demand of students, who are asking for induction of competent teachers.

The students said on Wednesday that unqualified teachers were serving at the Electrical Department and the administration was not interested in having qualified faculty. They said the administration had put their future at stake by closing the university every now and then. The administration kept the university closed for 50 days because of student strikes, who demand accreditation of the university from the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC). The students started protests on December 2 last year and went into verbal altercation with faculty and administration many times.

Newly appointed FUUAST VC Dr Muhammad Qaiser met the students, who told him that the administration had forced them to hold strikes, but they never turned violent. They said their session would end in June and much of their time had been consumed in protests. They asked the VC to suspend the classes for a month and induct qualified faculty during this time. The VC agreed for one-month suspension of classes and promised the students that he would get the university accredited at the earliest.

He said the PEC conditions would be fulfilled and other problems would be resolved soon. He said the HEC would arrange for the qualified faculty and issue funds for modernisation of labs and the library. He said the students would be provided with a good transport service and asked them to end protests. The students assured the VC of their cooperation. They said the PEC would accredit the university for engineering degrees only after the induction of highly qualified faculty. They said the university administration had not equipped labs and furnished library on modern lines, leave alone the induction of new faculty. Magistrate Kamran Cheema was present at the meeting between the VC and the students. Cheema praised the students for being peaceful throughout the protests. Daily Times
