Gordon College 'to be handed over to private sector'
Rawalpindi, Jan 17, 2008: The Punjab government has decided to formally hand over the
110-year-old Gordon College to the private sector.
According to sources,
the caretaker provincial government in this regard has sought all details of
assets of the college in writing.
The caretaker provincial education
minister, in a letter written to the principal of the college, has asked him to
inform in writing regarding all assets of the college, including land,
furniture, staff and other related details.
The decision to hand over
the college to the private sector has created panic among students and teachers
and they have decided to protest over the decision.
Divisional President
Punjab Professor & Lecturers Association Muhammad Ilyas Qureshi, in a
statement, said that the caretaker government has issued orders "but we would
resist and the decision regarding the protest against the decision would be
taken in a meeting of college teachers of the entire division.
Sources
said that the decision to hand over Gordon College to the private sector was
taken in the tenure of Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi but the decision was not
implemented due to strong protest from students and teachers.
Reliable
sources said that the provincial government has decided to hand over four
postgraduate colleges to the private sector and the decision would be
implemented in phases.
Besides Gordon College, other colleges to be
handed over to the private sector include Government Postgraduate College,
Asghar Mall; Government Viqar-un-Nisa College and Government Postgraduate
College for Women, Satellite Town.
Urdu University students continue their protest
Islamabad: Students of the Engineering Department of the Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science
& Technology protested continuously for the appointment of a permanent vice
chancellor and registration of their discipline with Pakistan Engineering
Council. For the acceptance of their genuine demand regarding the varsity's
affiliation with PEC and provision of adequate staff, the students also staged a
demonstration and hunger strike from many days. The university has been closed
from more than a month and the students announced to continue the boycott of
classes till the appointment of a permanent VC. After the December vacations,
the university was supposed to open on January 14 but the students decided to
continue their protest till the approval of their demands. The News
