HEC to introduce five-year LLB programme
Islamabad, Jan 12, 2008: To give legal
education its due importance along with other disciplines, the Higher Education
Commission (HEC) has decided to introduce five years LLB degree programme in
public sector universities and degree awarding institution of Pakistan.
This
was disclosed in a National Curriculum Revision Committee (NCRC) meeting held
here at HEC Headquarters.
The members of the NCRC apprise the HEC about
setting up of a world-class 'Law University' in lines with in other developing
countries.
A project prepared for the purpose has been approved by the
Planning Commission, Govt. of Pakistan to established main campus of the
University at Islamabad and two sub campuses one each in Lahore and Karachi. In
the 2nd phase the campuses at Peshawar and Quetta will be established.
Prof.
Ahmed Ali Khan, Project Director National Law University HEC informed that most
of the work to make the law university functional has been completed in all the
three campuses and the classes will start in Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi in
March 2008.
Explaining the salient features of the proposed five-year LLB
curriculum, he said that an effort has been made to bring the new scheme in line
with the modern curricula offered in top world-class universities.
The
scheme envisages inculcating in students a broad understanding of the social,
political and economic contexts within which the Pakistani and global legal
system operates as well as equipping the students with knowledge and
understanding of the fundamental doctrines and principles of Legal Knowledge. It
will also develop the intellectual, practical and transferable skills necessary
for employment in the legal profession and other careers.
Prof. Dr.
Riaz-ul-Haq Tariq, Member Academics (HEC) highlighting the significant of the
legal studies said that for maintaining standards in Legal Education there
should be some prescribed parameters for entering in the field of legal
education.
He emphasised that the curriculum once developed for this scheme
may properly be delivered in the classes to make students independent
learners.
He further said that with the support of HEC and the Pakistan Bar
Council an 'accreditation centre' for law colleges will be setup at the HEC to
scrutinise the performance of all private and public sector law
colleges.
The committee thoroughly revised the curriculum five years LLB
programme and developed a draft curriculum to be sent to all members of NCRC who
will give their feed-back and suggestions as early as possible.
