HEC to improve National Testing Services
Islamabad, Jan 31, 2008: The Higher Education
Commission (HEC) has decided to improve the National Testing Services (NTS) for
social sciences and humanities being offered at all institutes of the
country.
According to a press release, a meeting was held at the HEC
headquarters on Wednesday, chaired by Dr Riazul Haq Tariq, member (academics).
Tariq said the NTS should establish a cell for data and content analysis.
Graduate Admission Test (GAT) and National Testing Service (NTS) tests need
standardisation in terms of technical details, he said.
Parameters like
internal consistency, stability and predictive validity need to be reported, he
said, adding that the test should include some new experimental
items.
The meeting also discussed newly recruited staff's training in
areas related to test development and standardisation. The NTS management
representative agreed to make sufficient infrastructure and funds available for
improving the existing tests and bringing these at par with the international
level. Daily Times

Medical university to be set by HEC
Chairman Higher Education Commission (HEC),
Prof. Dr.Atta-ur-Rahman, said a modern hospital cum medical university would be
set up in collaboration with Harvard Medical International, USA, at a cost of Rs
18 billion.
Talking to PTV, he said that
Harvard Medical International had entered in a long-term relationship with
Defence Housing Authority (DHA) to help build a health and education complex on
100 acres land in Islamabad.
The
university will be built at DHA Islamabad.
Harvard Medical International, USA, will provide assistance in terms of
planning and execution of the project, he added.
He
said a total of 2,500 students will be trained at the graduate level, while
additional 600 seats will be available for postgraduate research
courses.
He
said, the postgraduate research will focus on neuro science, tropical diseases
and other related disciplines.
Dr.
Atta said that establishment of such a state-of-the-art hospital cum university
would go a long way in bridging the gap of modern medical facilities available
in the country.
The
initiative taken by DHA to set up a modern hospital cum medical university in
the capital was a laudable step, he said, stressing the need for establishing
more quality institutions in other disciplines.
He
said, the proposed hospital and medical university was the need of the hour,
which would not only cater to the needs of the local people, but international
students as well.
The
project would ensure provision of all modern medical facilities making it
possible for the students to benefit from the latest medical technology for
their research and would also make latest medical treatment available to the
people in the country.
The
enrollment and faculty development at higher levels which lack institutional and
human capacities to conduct any meaningful research and development projects,
would be extended required support and assistance to bring them at par with
other strengthened institutions.
He
said that It was absolutely necessary for a nation to improve its standards of
teaching, research and practice in science, technology and engineering to
compete in a globally changing environment, he added.
Several science and engineering fields have been identified as key
national priority areas and the programme would help build the institutional and
intellectual capacity for those disciplines to thrive and prosper in our
universities.
The
programme was also responsive to enhance skill levels and working conditions for
researchers and research students in the universities, he added. App
