HEC Scottish PhD studies: Scholarships
Islamabad, Jan 25, 2008: A joint venture between various Pakistani universities and St
Andrews University, Scotland, for PhD training in Social Sciences and Humanities
has been agreed upon.
The Higher Education Commission will fund the
project for 125 Pakistani students. It will commence from February 2009 and the
proposed duration of this linkage is 5 years. St Andrews is ranked as the best
university in Scotland, and 4th in UK as per Times Survey, 2007.
This
programme will result in joint PhDs to be delivered by the University of St
Andrews and 3 universities from Pakistan; Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad;
Government College University, Lahore; University of Punjab, Lahore. The meeting
was held from January 13-20, 2008, at St Andrews University to draw a plan for
the initiation of the programme. Subjects included for joint PhDs are Economics,
Finance, Management, International Relations, Psychology, English Literature,
History, Anthropology and Mathematics.
In order to establish this
programme, each Pakistani university will sign an appropriate protocol with St
Andrews, together with operational plans for each department. It was also agreed
that intensive training courses in academic English would be arranged for
younger faculty from Pakistan. St Andrews will also assist these Pakistani
universities in developing their own career services centres. Those post
doctoral researchers in Pakistan in the humanities and social sciences, who have
difficulty in pursuing further research activities, will be given a chance by St
Andrews to continue their research there.
The Pakistani delegation also
met the vice chancellor of the St Andrew University, Scotland. The visiting
delegation also met Professor Dr David Corner, Advisor to the Vice Chancellor;
Professor Dr. Lorna Milne, Dean of Arts; Professor Dr C. John Smith Dean,
Graduate Studies; Professor Dr. Tariq S. Durrani, Vice President, Royal Society
of Scotland.
Given the nation's poor international standing in the social
sciences and humanities research, it is hoped that this joint venture with St
Andrews will aid Pakistani universities in capacity building in these areas as
well as to develop scholarship in research. This will help them in teaching
students the latest up to date material, and will also improve Pakistan's
standing in these disciplines. The News

QUETTA: The president of the Khushhali Bank, Mr Ghalib Nishtar,
has said that his bank would extend scholarships to maximum number of deserving
students of Balochistan on the basis of merit.
The Khushhali Bank is
extending the scholarship programme in association with the United States Agency
for Development and in the collaboration with the Balochistan University of
