HEC recommends TOEIC for appointments and awarding of degrees
Islamabad, Jan 16, 2008: The Higher Education
Commission (HEC) has recommended all public sector universities and degree
awarding institutions to implement Test of English for International
Communication (TOEIC) for the appointment of faculty members and awarding of
degrees.
The decision was made in a meeting of Quality Assurance
Committee of the HEC held at the Lahore HEC Regional Centre. According to a
press release issued on Tuesday, the committee decided that each university
should be advised for the capacity building of their faculty members and
ensuring English proficiency through a competitive examination before
appointment.
It said the committee also recommended that by 2008, fresh
faculty members appointed in the universities must clear the TOEIC and by 2009,
graduates will have to pass the TOEIC test to qualify for the
degrees.
The committee advised the universities to arrange TOEIC for
university students and faculty members and the HEC would help in developing the
TOEIC. The decision of the committee has been circulated to all public sector
universities and degree awarding institutions
This decision has been made
keeping in view the fact that higher education teachers' main role is to
disseminate and discover useful knowledge, develop professional skills, ethical
dispositions and commitment to excellence.
It is highly imperative to
empower them, with an ample background and updated skills necessary for
effective participation in academic research and administrative functioning of
the universities introducing an educational culture at par with global
standards. Dialy Times
