Happy New Year!
Jan 01, 2008: The year that ended at the stroke of midnight has been a tumultuous one for
people around the world as well as in Pakistan, so those of us who believe that
there must be something inside of us that needs to get rid of the effects of our
fate and our own decisions and start anew, need to commit ourselves to try and
make 2008 a more fulfilling and happier year. In this spirit, we wish a very
happy New Year - a 'new year' for a new beginning!
According to
historical facts, the month of January was named for the Roman god, Janus, who
is pictured with two heads - one looks forward, the other back, symbolising a
break between the old and new, while today the popular symbols are a newborn
baby, starting the next year and an old man with a sickle winding up the year
that has ended.
We need to follow the spirit of these symbols and begin
the year by trying not to look back and nurture old wounds but with new feelings
of hope and a resolution to be better human beings in all aspects of our lives.
Pakistan is passing through a difficult period and we need to remain
united so that enemies of this country do not have the satisfaction of seeing us
split into different factions with conflicting aims and objectives that weaken
its foundations. We need to be more tolerant of each other's views; agree to
disagree but not create situations where conflicts result because of diverging
views. Live and let live is a good motto to espouse when kept within the
parameters of social norms.
So, once again, a very happy New Year to you
- may it bring peace and prosperity in the world but especially to Pakistan.
