Inter-collegiate declamation contest
Karachi, Jan 24, 2008: An Inter-collegiate bilingual declamation contest was held at the Defence Authority Degree College in which students of fourteen reputed colleges of the metropolis participated. The participants spoke on various topics both serious and humorous.

In the English declamation contest, Tipu Sultan of Pakistan Navy Engineering College bagged the first position, Imaam Ahmed of PECHS Girls College secured the second and Nabila Zeeshan of Defence Authority Degree College for Women, Phase-VIII, the third.

In the Urdu declamation contest, Areeba Mushtaq of the Hamdard College of Science and Commerce got the first position, S/Lt Sumair Irshad of the Pakistan Navy Engineering College secured the second, and Quratul Ain Yousuf of Bahria College, NORE-I, the third.

The coveted trophy was won by Pak Navy Engineering College, PNS Johar. Dr Sajida Zaki and Mrs Shahnaz Khurshid were judges for the English declamation whereas Prof. Dr S.M. Unus Hasany and Prof. Haroon Rashid were judges for the Urdu.

The Chairman, Board of Intermediate Education, Karachi, Anwar Ahmed Zai was the chief guest.

Speaking on the occasion, the chief guest emphasised upon the need for promoting a culture of healthy co-curricular activities in educational institutions which, he said, was vital to intellectual and physical development. He said the young generation had tremendous potential, which should be channelised in a positive direction for optimum utility.

He appreciated the content and style of presentation of speeches by the students and gave them important tips for further refining their oratory skills. He said that the speeches of the students reflected a deep sense of understanding of their environment and a strong desire to reform society. He commended the ability of the college for organising an event of intellectual and literary significance.

The college Principal, Capt (Retd) Ahmed Zaheer, PN, in his welcome address, said that the art of communication was the most important ingredient of human personality and a stepping stone to success in life. He said that a good orator was a good leader since through this skill he could influence the emotions of the people and influence their actions. The News

Public school sweeps science contest
LARKANA: The Public School Larkana clinched the first position, the Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology (SZABIST) claimed the second and the Cadet College Larkana made it to the third at the conclusion of two-day intercollegiate science exhibition on Wednesday.

The students of the three institutions had put on display around 30 projects in the exhibition, which ranged from websites to power generation by solar energy.

A large number of students from different schools and colleges visited the two-day exhibition, which was organised by the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE) Larkana.

District Coordination Officer Ghulam Mustafa Phull who chaired the exhibition's concluding session underlined the need for promoting healthy competition among educational institutions in the district.

He said the exhibitions would greatly help in hunting talent urged all the academic institutions to make an annual feature of their academic calendars.

A four-member committee of judges comprising senior professors announced position holders after visiting the stalls and getting briefed about the projects.

Later, the DCO handed over trophies to the position holders.

Doctors: The Doctors Action Committee on Wednesday demanded that the Sindh government should give appointment letters to the doctors who had passed the recently held entry test conducted by the National Testing Service for vacant posts in the rural and basic health centres of the province.

The committee leaders said after a protest demonstration that Sindh Health Department had organised test on Nov 4 for filling 1,605 vacant posts of medical officers.

Around 5,500 doctors appeared in the test and only 1,584 got through it but the passing candidates were still waiting for the offer letters, they said. Dawn
