101 schools take part in international olympiad
Karachi, Jan 26, 2008: The opening ceremony of
the annual International School Olympia (ISEO 2008), hosted and organized by the
Karachi High School (KHS), was held on Friday.
The program manager, Sarah
Malik, said that this year 101 schools are participating in the
olympiad from not only Pakistan, but from India, England and Canada as well. "We
have participants from schools in India, UK and some Canadian schools- who are
participating via video conferencing," said Sarah.
The opening ceremony
took place at 10:00 a.m. with chief guest deputy city mayor Nasreen Jalil
addressing the participants. She encouraged the students to try their hardest
and believe in themselves. The judges and sponsors were also present on the
occasion along with the United States Educational Foundation Pakistan (USEFP)
Executive Director Dr Grace Clark.
After the introduction and a recap of
the previous year's ISEO, the principal of KHS, Ms Parveen Kaasim, gave a
briefing on the schedule of the upcoming days.
Students also gave a
five-minute news report which will be a daily part of the Olympiad. Friday's
news report was about the events due to take place on the following day. This is
a new concept that has been introduced to the competition. Different teams will
give news reports each day after holding short interviews and reporting on the
happenings at the Olympiad. At the end of the competition, one of the teams will
be awarded with the best performance in the field of journalism.
The
bridge tournament was the first contest of the day which took place at the
National Stadium. The Art display at the KHS campus followed next along with the
submissions for the cyber fair projects. The judges were impressed with the
elocution and prose recitals and the screening of short films by students were
also greatly admired by jury and audience alike. The topic for the short-film
contest was 'Humour in everyday life'. Sarah Malik said that the
judges felt that there is "amazing talent in store for the Pakistani film
industry".
The day ended with the qualifying round of the juniors and
seniors vocal competition which was judged by Tina Sani, Naiyara Noor and Arshad
Mehmood.
Malik said that there have been two new events introduced this
year. "Daastan Goi and Roving Reporters are our two new competitions which have
been introduced keeping in mind the rising trend of media studies. These
competitions cover two major aspects of the media, story telling and reporting,"
said Sarah.
Daastan Goi is a concept which was introduced by Murtaza
Danish Hussaini at the last Kara Film festival. This form of theatrics dates
back to the Mughals, where the royal family invited story tellers to give a
narrative performance at their courts. This contest will be held on January 26
at 2:30 p.m. at the KHS campus and the two stories that have been chosen for
narration are "Daastan-e-Amir Hamza" and "Tilisum HoshRuba".
Other
competitions and events planned for Saturday are the chess tournament at the KHS
auditorium, along with the photography display to be held on campus. The debate
contest will follow next before a break for Lunch. Daastangoi and theater
performances will take place in the late afternoon.
The results for all
the contests will be announced in the closing ceremony which will take place on
Tuesday, January 29 at 5:00 p.m. at the KHS front court. Daily Times
