NED extends classes 1hr to make up for unrest
Karachi, Jan 22, 2008: NED University has decided
to extend classes by one hour, for all days except Fridays, because of the loss
of time precipitated by political uncertainty.
NED Registrar Eng. Javed
Aziz Khan confirmed that the decision was taken to cover one week
of study that was lost. The academic year was scheduled to commence January 1
but due to the events of December 27, classes began January 7, a week late.
"Instead of taking it to the end and in order to avoid a marathon, we decided to
extend the class timings now," he said.
The revised timings will be in
place till February 16 but if there is further trouble the school may decide on
keeping them longer. The registrar said there had not been any bad reaction to
this decision, that was taken Jan 12, but naturally some people were
grumbling.
Dean of Mechanical and Material Engineering Dr Nazim Uddin
Qureshi, a graduate of NED, considered this an excellent decision. "We want the
four-year degree to be completed within the stipulated time. At the university
we follow the schedule religiously." Qureshi recalled that he enrolled with the
four-year programme in 1969 but because of political developments he graduated
in 1974 instead of a year earlier. "It was difficult to explain the delay to
employers," he said. "Most of the time it happens because a student
fails. We do not want that happening again," he said, adding that the academic
year is supposed to end by the end of December.
Some students had mixed
opinions. AA, a second-year telecommunications student, said it would be just
"OK" for now, but if the scheduled continued, it could affect his "social
life".
First-year student FA argued that it became too "hectic". "If you
go to my class or any other class you will find poor attendance; the students
usually slip out," she said, adding that it would affect their prayer timings.
SA from the first-year mechanical batch claimed that the decision was
unnecessary as it gave students less time for assignments. He also complained
that the first-year students were not issued books and that was a problem
too.
Aside from these arguments, third-year student Shehryar had just one
point to make: "The politicians and terrorists do [what they like] but we have
to bear the consequences." Daily Times
