PUASA demands inclusion in PU's decisions: Other PU news
Lahore, Jan 31, 2008: The Punjab University
Academic Staff Association (PUASA) forwards its 20-point demand on Wednesday to
PU vice chancellor (VC) Prof Mujahid Kamran to include the association in
decision-making regarding the PU.
The PU environment these days is tense
after the newly appointed VC's decision of suspending former Applied Psychology
Department director Mian Aftab Ahmed. The decision has sparked a controversy, as
the PUASA alleges that the decision has been taken without the approval of the
PU Syndicate.
The association called an urgent meeting the day VC's
decision came. The meeting declared the decision biased and decided to launch a
protest movement. The PUASA officials distributed pamphlets on last Tuesday
among teachers to mobilise them against the decision.
In this confused
situation, the association has now forwarded its demands to the VC. PUASA
president Dr Mumtaz Ahmed Salik said that traditionally the newly elected
academic staff association put forward demands to the VC. "The demands have been
crafted after consultation with PU teachers due to the changed circumstances in
the school. There are several bodies like the PU Syndicate, Board of Studies and
Senate Committee. The VC has been asked to take no decision without having close
consultation with the related body," he said.
"The VC has taken the
controversial decision without the authorisation of the Syndicate. According to
the PU rules, the Syndicate itself can probe into a matter. The VC had not asked
the Syndicate for an enquiry, which seems Ahmed has been victimised. Former PU
VC Lt Gen (r) Arshad Mahmood had taken several decisions without the Syndicate's
authorisation. We expect the new VC will not follow suit," he said.
The
PUASA president said the demanded included issued like scholarships and the
matter of research papers.
PU spokesman Dr Mujahid Mansoori said the
meetings of the PU bodies like the Senate Committee were not held on regular
basis. "In the absence of regular meetings, we cannot streamline matters," he
said and added that the former VC set up various colleges and introduced new
disciplines without discussion in the Academic Council.
PU registrar Dr
Naeem Ahmed Khan confirmed that the PUASA had forwarded demands and said the
administration was already working on most of them. The new VC was working for
the betterment of the teachers, he added. Daily Times
