PU mulls adopting Tenure Track System (TTS)
The Punjab University (PU) held
a meeting on adopting the Tenure Track System (TTS) on Monday and decided to
take a final decision in this regard in the meeting of the Syndicate to be held
today (Tuesday).
According to a press release issued by the university,
the decision was taken in a meeting attended by vice chancellor Dr Muhahid
Kamran, deans, heads of departments and professors. The meeting discussed
various aspects of the system.
The vice chancellor said the adoption of
the TTS would raise the educational standard of the university in addition to
raising salaries of teachers. "The TTS will be adopted after the Syndicate
approves it and teachers' apprehensions are removed. Once the system is adopted,
the senior teachers will have more time for research because after receiving
handsome salaries they will be able to stop taking extra evening classes. The
junior teachers and the teachers in the middle of their career will have more
classes in the evening, hence they will receive more salaries," he said. "All
teachers and the school will benefit from the system."
Earlier, PU
registrar Prof Muhammad Naeem Khan introduced the TTS in the meeting. Dean of
Science Prof Jamil Anwar Chaudhry said the Higher Education Commission had
initiated the system about three years ago. He said currently 12 universities
had adopted the system while the Karachi University, Sindh University and
Balochistan University were in the process of adopting it. "Because the PU has
not yet adopted the system, foreign qualified teachers are not willing to join
it," he added.
Faculty of Engineering and Technology dean Prof Muhammad
Arif Butt said the Syndicate's last meeting had endorsed the adoption of the
system.
PU official spokesman Dr Mujahid Ali Mansoori said the
university, in the past, had made efforts to adopt the system. "The research
culture in the school will improve by implementing it," he added.
Under
the TTS, a professor is offered a salary between Rs 180,000 and Rs 312,500, an
associate professor between Rs 120,000 and Rs 226,500 and an assistant professor
between Rs 80,000 and Rs 161,000.
PU cancels 600 degrees
The Punjab University (PU) has
cancelled around 600 degrees of those pupils who obtained two degrees in a
year.
According to the Punjab University Act, no candidate could get two
degrees in a year, said PU spokesman Dr Mujahid Mansoori.
A PU
examination branch official said the university had received complaints from
various foreign institutes in this regard. He said these candidates had been
enrolled in various departments at the same year. He said majority of them were
enrolled in the PU Law College. He said in the past no action had been taken
against such candidates.
Prof Dr Mujahid Mansoori said, "To get two
degrees in a year is a crime. No university across the country allows its pupils
to study two disciplines at the same time."
A large number of affected
students said they had got two degrees to get a better job opportunity. PU
registrar Dr Naeem Ahmad Khan said the newly installed computerised system could
identify those pupils who were enrolled to various departments.
Abid, a
PU Law College student, said he had got his law and political science degrees,
the same year. He said the cancellation would affect the students who had
applied for their admission to foreign universities.
On condition of
anonymity, a PU teacher said move against such candidates was appreciable, but
the university should send the names of such candidates to the complainant
foreign institutes. He said, "It is the sole responsibility of the PU to
highlight the names of such candidates on university's official
website."
PU controller of examinations Prof Dr Taqi Zahid said the
university had cancelled a number of degrees in this regard. Daily Times
