PU adopts Tenure Track System
Lahore, Jan 23, 2008: The Punjab University (PU) Syndicate
on Tuesday reached a consensus to adopt the Tenure Track System (TTS).
According to a press release issued by the PU on Tuesday, the decision
was taken in the syndicate's meeting. The meeting was the first under the
chairmanship of the new vice chancellor (VC).
Speaking on the occasion
the VC, who is also chairman of the syndicate, lauded the syndicate members and
the PU office-bearers for this historic achievement. "Despite continuous efforts
during the last three years, the PU could not adopt the TTS. The TTS's presence
on the campus will foster an atmosphere of research learning."
After
adopting the TTS, the PU teachers would become financially strong, they would
utilise their energies in a better way and foreign qualified Pakistanis would
prefer to be part of the PU.
The syndicate members said, "The PU teachers
have always been demanding the adoption of the TTS." Justice (r) Sardar Muhammad
Iqbal said the TTS would become the statute of the university and it could be
amended subsequently.
Higher Education Commission (HEC) representative
Dr Shahid Amjad Chaudhry praised the PU VC and said the rights of the faculty
would be protected and teachers could be appointed to both systems.
The
HEC had introduced the TTS three years ago. In January 2004, the PU Syndicate
had taken up the issue for the first time. In December 2005, a draft was
prepared in this regard, but it could not be approved. In June 2006, the
syndicate had formed a committee to prepare a policy on adopting the
system.
Meanwhile, the HEC had made some changes after reviewing the
system and some PU Syndicate members requested the PU administration to approve
the new version of the system.
Including the PU, 13 universities of
Pakistan have adopted this system so far. The Karachi University, the Sindh
University and the Balochistan University are in the process of adopting the
system. The syndicate meeting was attended by Justice (r) Muhammad Iqbal,
Education additional secretary (AS) Muhammad Akram Chaudhry, Finance AS Tariq
Najeeb Najmi, Prof Dr Muhammad Jamshed, Prof Dr Shahida Hasnain, Prof Dr Khwaja
Harris Rasheed, Dr Zaid Mahmood, Dr Mumtaz Anwar, Dr Shahid Amjad Chaudhry, Syed

BISE to computerise all records
Lahore, Jan 23, 2008: The Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE)
is computerising all records since the board was founded in 1954, said BISE
chairman Prof Zikariya Butt at a lunch held in honour of Lahore Education
Reporters Association (LERA) on Tuesday.
Prof Zikariya said the board had
currently computerised records till 2000. "The shortage of staff is a main
hurdle preventing us from completing the uphill task. The number of students
taking matriculation and intermediate examinations has dramatically increased
over the years. A decision under the Punjab Boards Committee of Chairmen has
