'PU will hire highly qualified faculty'
Lahore, Jan 24, 2008: The
Punjab University (PU) is planning to hire highly qualified foreign PhD holders
to improve the research standards on the campus, PU vice chancellor (VC) Prof Dr
Mujahid Kamran said on Wednesday.
He said, "In
the global world, the worth of universities is recognised on the basis of
research. Unfortunately, the PU is not among the top 600 universities of the
world." He said the number of PhD teachers on the campus had declined in the
last 30 years. He said about 25,000 students were enrolled in 65 PU departments
and 760 faculty members, on regular and contract basis, were teaching them. Out
of these teachers, he said, only 216 teachers were PhD-degree
holders.
"Faculty of Social Sciences and Behavioural Sciences has only 9
PhD teachers, out of 40. Faculty of Economics has only 8 PhD teachers, out of
46. Faculty of Arts has only 9 teachers, out of 50.
He appreciated the
efforts and steps taken by President Pervez Musharraf regarding higher studies.
He said, "If we follow Mr President's vision, the education and research
standard of Pakistani universities would be quite better."
In the past,
he said, the PU funds had been utilised on construction work without any "proper
planning". He said with the implement of TTS, the PU teachers would become
financially strong. "The PU awaits Rs 450 billion funds, as the Higher Education
Commission is concerned about the plagiarism by the university teachers."
He said PU chancellor/Governor Lt Gen (r) Khalid Maqbool had taken
strict action on the plagiarism issue. "Joint study programmes with other
countries will be started. The PU administration has contacted some universities
across the world for this purpose. We want to promote healthy extracurricular
activities and believe in freedom of speech. We are planning to introduce a
policy for students in this connection." Daily Times
