Science, technology ministry being restructured: minister
Lahore: Education, Science and Technology Minister Shams Kassim Lakha has said that the Science and Technology Ministry is being restructured with an objective to expedite the industrial development in the country.

Speaking at the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Monday, he said the country's economy was suffering losses due to a shortage of proper research institutes. "Realising this fact, the government has doubled funds for education and health sectors," he added.

He said that an import substitutions plan would be finalised with the focus on strengthening the industrial sector. About the ongoing energy crisis, Lakha said the government was paying attention to renewable energy projects in collaboration with the private sector.

Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Mohammad Ali Mian said the country's main exports were rice, textile and sports goods. "On the other hand we are importing machinery, transportation equipment, edible oil, iron and steel, which are high value added items," he added. He said: "Pakistan's agriculture sector is among the best sectors in the world but we have failed to exploit our traditional strength due to lack of technology".

He said a large part of the country agriculture production was wasted because of non-availability of chill rooms and post harvest technology. The Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry president said the technology management was one of the key factors, which increased the productivity, effectiveness and efficiency of a company.

"The successful incorporation of existing technologies into the business and anticipation of the impact of emerging new technologies are important tasks for companies to bring new products to market as quickly as possible," he added.

He said Pakistani industrialists in general were not aware of the facilities available in the public sector because there was lack of trust between R&D organisations and the industry. According to a press statement, he was addressing a certificate distribution ceremony arranged by the Institute of Continuing Education and Extension (ICE&E) of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) on the completion of a four-month training course of the village livestock workers from the Livestock and Dairy Development Board (LDDB) at the varsity's city campus on Monday.

The minister said livestock was playing an important role in the development of national economy as it contributed 50 per cent to the agriculture GDP and 12 per cent to the national GDP. UVAS Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Nawaz said the UVAS was a national university and its doors were open to students and farmers from across the country.

He said the university had state-of-the-art laboratories and other research and training facilities. ICE&E Director Dr Muhammad Amin Sheikh said that currently about 1,500 students were getting training in different disciplines in the institute.

He said that the institute arranged need-based and demand-driven training and extension programmes in collaboration with public and private organisations. Punjab Minister for Livestock and Dairy Development Mumtaz Muhammad Khan Manais stressed that the training of the village livestock workers would go a long way in development of the livestock and dairy sector. Livestock and Dairy Development Board Chief Executive Dr Muhammad Afzal threw light on various projects of the Livestock and Dairy Development Board.
