PU raises age limit for scholarships
Lahore, Jan 29, 2008: The Punjab University has extended the age limit for teachers from
40 to 45 years for foreign scholarships, which will help more teachers to get
HEC scholarships for PhD abroad. According to a press statement, it is estimated
the 5-year relaxation in the upper age limit for overseas scholarships and
travel grants to faculty members would benefit many new teachers of the
university, including 37 lecturers.Among the lecturers, 10 are from Institute of
Education and Research (IER), three from College of Art and Design, two each
from the Department of Urdu, Hailey College of Commerce, Institute of
Communication Studies, Institute of Administrative Sciences, the Department of
Islamic Studies and Centre for High Energy Physics and one each from the
Department of Applied Psychology, the Department of Persian, the Department of
Punjabi, the Department of Hindi, University Law College, the Department of
Political Science, the Department of Economics, Institute of Business
Administration, the Department of History, the Department of Mycology and Plant
Pathology, the Department of Space Science and College of Pharmacy. PU syndicate
member (lecturer cadre) Ziaullah Shah had made the demand during Vice Chancellor
Dr Mujahid Kamran's first address to the university lecturers on January 24.
PU announces results The
Punjab University Examination Department has declared results of various
examinations. According to a press release, the exams include MEd Visual
Impairment 2nd Annual Examination, 2003-2005 and Annual Examination 2005-2006,
MSc Chemistry Part-II Annual Examination, 2007 and MSc Physics Part-II Annual
Examination, 2007. The detailed results are available at university website

Sargodha University teachers penalized
Sargodha: The University of Sargodha VC Prof Dr Muhammad Akram
Chaudhry has suspended Mr Badiuz Zaman, a lecturer of the Department of
Economics, on charges of misconduct and helping out of the way a candidate
appearing in the MA economics exam.
The candidate was the wife of Mr
Shabbir Ahmad Gondal, an assistant professor of the same department. The VC also
repatriated the services of Mr Shabbir Ahmad Gondal to his parent Education
Department for concealing the fact that his wife was appearing in MA Economics
Part-I annual examination 2007 (for which he was the examiner) and making his
junior teacher to help his wife attempt the paper. The VC also formed an inquiry
committee to look into the matter.
MEDICAL COLLEGE: The VC who
broke earth for Sargodha Medical College project on Faisalabad Road on Monday
said the varsity would announce 20 scholarships for MPhil students. Dawn
Science, technology ministry being restructured: minister
Lahore: Education, Science and Technology Minister Shams Kassim Lakha has
said that the Science and Technology Ministry is being restructured with an
objective to expedite the industrial development in the country.
Speaking
at the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Monday, he said the country's
economy was suffering losses due to a shortage of proper research institutes.
"Realising this fact, the government has doubled funds for education and health
sectors," he added.
He said that an import substitutions plan would be
finalised with the focus on strengthening the industrial sector. About the
ongoing energy crisis, Lakha said the government was paying attention to
renewable energy projects in collaboration with the private
sector.
Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Mohammad Ali
Mian said the country's main exports were rice, textile and sports goods. "On
the other hand we are importing machinery, transportation equipment, edible oil,
iron and steel, which are high value added items," he added. He said:
"Pakistan's agriculture sector is among the best sectors in the world but we
have failed to exploit our traditional strength due to lack of technology".
He said a large part of the country agriculture production was wasted
because of non-availability of chill rooms and post harvest technology. The
Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry president said the technology management
was one of the key factors, which increased the productivity, effectiveness and
efficiency of a company.
"The successful incorporation of existing
technologies into the business and anticipation of the impact of emerging new
technologies are important tasks for companies to bring new products to market
as quickly as possible," he added.
He said Pakistani industrialists in
general were not aware of the facilities available in the public sector because
there was lack of trust between R&D organisations and the industry.
'Collective efforts required to promote livestock': Punjab Minister for
Livestock and Dairy Development Mumtaz Muhammad Khan Manais has called for
collective efforts for the development of livestock and dairy sector in the
country.
According to a press statement, he was addressing a certificate
distribution ceremony arranged by the Institute of Continuing Education and
Extension (ICE&E) of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS)
on the completion of a four-month training course of the village livestock
workers from the Livestock and Dairy Development Board (LDDB) at the varsity's
city campus on Monday.
The minister said livestock was playing an
important role in the development of national economy as it contributed 50 per
cent to the agriculture GDP and 12 per cent to the national GDP. UVAS
Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Nawaz said the UVAS was a national university
and its doors were open to students and farmers from across the country.
He said the university had state-of-the-art laboratories and other
research and training facilities. ICE&E Director Dr Muhammad Amin Sheikh
said that currently about 1,500 students were getting training in different
disciplines in the institute.
He said that the institute arranged
need-based and demand-driven training and extension programmes in collaboration
with public and private organisations. Punjab Minister for Livestock and Dairy
Development Mumtaz Muhammad Khan Manais stressed that the training of the
village livestock workers would go a long way in development of the livestock
and dairy sector. Livestock and Dairy Development Board Chief Executive Dr
Muhammad Afzal threw light on various projects of the Livestock and Dairy
Development Board.
Punjab Livestock Minister Mumtaz Manais and
Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Nawaz distributed certificates among the
workers who were trained in clinical nutrition, medicine and animal
