Private schools start collecting 3-month fees in advance
Karachi, Jan 12, 2008: Parents in the city are
distressed as private schools are asking for June, July and August fees in
advance with the January and February fees. Notices to this effect were
distributed among students asking parents to pay the fees in order to maintain
the school.
However, the City District Government Karachi (CDGK) and
private school bodies have no information about this. CDGK's education
department officials claim that they have no idea about what is going on and are
referring inquires to bodies such as the Private Institutions Sindh Directorate.
Sindh Private Institutions Director Mansoob Hussain Siddiqi was not available
for comments.
"Private schools have always collected June and July
tuition fees in advance, however schools asking for August fees in advance
should be avoided," said All Private School Management Association Sindh
(APSMAS) Chairman Syed Khalid Shah. "As the new academic session will start from
April, private school managements have decided to collect June and July fees
along with January and February," he added.
Shah said that currently
there are around 4,500 recognized private schools in the city while around 1,500
schools in the slum areas are illegal.
Responding to a question
regarding the academic session Shah said that the Steering Committee of the
provincial education department decided to change the academic session last
month and will finalize details in a few days. "We conducted a survey among
private schools. More than 98 percent of them wanted to start the new academic
session in April instead of August." Daily Times
